Celebrating a Musical Journey from San Antonio’s West Side to the World
The free community exhibition showcased instruments, photographs, awards, and personal mementos that documented Jiménez’s groundbreaking career and his impact on conjunto, Tejano, and roots music.
Rooted in the dance halls, family gatherings, and cultural traditions of San Antonio’s West Side, Jiménez transformed conjunto music from a regional tradition into a globally recognized art form while remaining deeply connected to the community that shaped him.
Through collaborations that crossed musical boundaries, Jiménez became a cultural ambassador whose accordion sound connected generations and introduced audiences around the world to the spirit of conjunto music.
The exhibition highlighted how Flaco’s artistry reflected the joy, resilience, and cultural richness of the Tejano experience while helping preserve and elevate conjunto music for future generations.
Remembering Flaco Jiménez One Year Later
The closing ceremony comes one year after Jiménez’s passing on July 31, 2025, at the age of 86 following complications related to vascular health and diabetes.
More than a Grammy-winning musician, Jiménez was considered the heartbeat of conjunto music and one of San Antonio’s greatest cultural ambassadors.
Born on March 11, 1939, Jiménez was a fifth-generation musician and the son of conjunto pioneer Santiago Jiménez Sr.. By the age of seven, he was already performing alongside his father, developing the accordion style that would later help redefine conjunto music worldwide.
Throughout his legendary career, Jiménez collaborated with artists across genres, including the Texas Tornados, Ry Cooder, Dwight Yoakam, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, and The Rolling Stones.
His achievements included five Grammy Awards, the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and the National Heritage Fellowship. He was also inducted into the International Latin Music Hall of Fame and the Tejano Music Hall of Fame.
A Final Tribute to a Texas Legend
As “From the West Side to the World: Un Homenaje a Flaco Jiménez” comes to an end, the closing ceremony offers fans, musicians, and community members an opportunity to celebrate the lasting influence of a man whose accordion carried the sound of San Antonio across the world.
Flaco Jiménez’s music continues to inspire new generations of musicians while preserving the traditions, stories, and cultural identity of conjunto music.
