For generations, Tejano and Norteño music have served as the soundtrack to South Texas, preserving culture, celebrating heritage, and connecting communities across borders. On Tuesday, Bexar County, home of the “Tejano Capital of the World” in San Antonio, will officially recognize that legacy by honoring many of the artists who helped define the genre.
The Bexar County Commissioners Court, led by Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai in partnership with Bexar County Clerk Lucy Adame-Clark and with assistance from De Luna Event Consulting, will present a special proclamation declaring August 2026 as a “Tribute to Icons of Tejano & Norteño Industry.”
The ceremony will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2026, at 9 a.m. inside the Bexar County Commissioners Court on the second floor of the Historic Courthouse in downtown San Antonio.
According to organizers, the proclamation celebrates the “enduring cultural legacy, musical influence, and historical impact” of artists whose contributions have shaped the sound and spirit of Tejano and Norteño music throughout South Texas and beyond.
Among the most recognizable names being honored are legendary vocalist Ruben Ramos, whose career has spanned more than six decades; Tejano pioneer Roberto Pulido; award-winning group Los Palominos; and the late Emilio Navaira, whose family will accept the recognition on his behalf.
Other celebrated artists include Tejano favorites Elsa Garcia, Jaime DeAnda, La Sombra, Sunny Ozuna, Augustine Ramirez, Raulito Navaira, La Tropa F, and Tejano icon Dr. Patsy Torres.
The proclamation will also recognize:
- Vicente “Chente” Barrera
- Freddie Martinez Sr.
- Henry Zimmerle (family recognized posthumously)
- Hugo Guerrero
- Frank Tovar & Los Tovares Band
- Los Aguilares: Genaro & Emilio (family recognized posthumously)
- Los Desperadoz
- Carlos Guzman
- Placido Salazar
- Juan B. Ortiz and Campanas de America
- Sammy “Niño” Brown Alvarez
- Toby De Luna
Several of the honorees represent the foundation upon which today’s Tejano artists continue to build. Their recordings, live performances, songwriting, and influence have helped preserve a uniquely Texan musical tradition while inspiring new generations of performers and fans.
The public and media are invited to attend the proclamation ceremony, which highlights Bexar County’s continued commitment to recognizing the individuals whose music has become an enduring part of the region’s cultural identity.
The event begins at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, inside the Bexar County Commissioners Court at the Historic Courthouse, located at 100 Dolorosa in downtown San Antonio.
