The free public event will take place on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. at the museum, located at 1414 Fredericksburg Road in San Antonio, Texas. Organizers are inviting fans, friends, and the Tejano community to celebrate the addition of Perez’s personal artifacts into the museum’s permanent collection.

“This evening is more than an exhibit — it’s a celebration of the music, career, and legacy of an artist who has helped carry Tejano music forward and whose voice has touched fans throughout Texas and beyond,” the museum shared in its invitation.

Known affectionately by fans as “La Voz” (The Voice), Perez has built one of the most respected careers in Tejano music. His smooth multi-octave baritone and unmistakable vocal style helped redefine the genre by blending traditional Tejano and conjunto with rhythm and blues, classic soul, and country influences.

Perez began his professional career in 1985 as a drummer and background vocalist for the San Antonio-based group Mysterio before his powerful singing voice quickly earned him frontman roles with The Latin Breed and later David Lee Garza y Los Musicales. Those performances established him as one of Tejano music’s brightest young talents before launching his solo career in 1993.

His debut album, Te Llevo en Mi, introduced Perez as a solo artist and was followed by acclaimed releases including Steel Rain (1994) and The Voice (1995), cementing his place among Tejano music’s elite performers. Throughout the 1990s and beyond, Perez delivered enduring hits such as “Ven A Mi” and “Lo Que Yo Tengo,” songs that remain staples on Tejano radio and dance floors.

Over the years, Perez has amassed an impressive list of honors, including eight Latin Grammy Award nominations and seven Tejano Music Awards for Male Vocalist of the Year between 2000 and 2008. In 2010, he added another Male Vocalist of the Year trophy while also receiving the prestigious Male Vocalist of the Decade honor, recognizing his sustained excellence and influence on the genre.

His impact continues to be recognized beyond the music industry. In January 2026, the Bexar County Commissioners Court presented Perez with a special proclamation as part of its “Tribute to the Icons of Tejano and Norteño Music,”honoring his lasting contributions to South Texas culture and music.

Perez also remains creatively active, releasing the albums Le Seguiremos in 2025 and Jay Perez Gr2 earlier this month, proving that his unmistakable voice continues to resonate with longtime fans while reaching new audiences.

The exhibit induction marks another milestone in Perez’s storied career and ensures that pieces of his musical journey will be preserved for generations of Tejano fans to experience.

Admission to the event is free, and the public is encouraged to attend and celebrate one of Tejano music’s most enduring and influential artists.
