Tortilla Factory Celebrates 50 Years With Star-Studded Anniversary Album Honoring Legacy and Embracing the Future

Fifty years after Tony “Ham” Guerrero forever changed the sound of Tejano music, Tortilla Factory is celebrating its golden anniversary with the release of a landmark album that honors the band’s legendary past while introducing an exciting new chapter.

Now led by Tony “Ham” Guerrero’s son, Alfredo Antonio Guerrero, the legendary group has officially released its highly anticipated 50th Anniversary Album, a 22-track collection celebrating five decades of music, culture, family, and legacy.

The project brings together an impressive lineup of collaborators spanning generations and musical styles, while staying true to the unmistakable Tejano and Chicano sound that made Tortilla Factory one of the genre’s most influential bands.

Leading the album is the emotional new single “En La Cocina”, featuring JR Gomez and Max Baca of Los Texmaniacs. The heartfelt cumbia serves as the first featured release from the anniversary project.

The artwork also includes Alfredo’s touching words:

“There are loves that begin in silence… and memories that always find their way home.”

The Spanish title, “En La Cocina de Tu Mamá,” translates to “In Your Mother’s Kitchen,” evoking memories of family, love, and the place where countless treasured moments begin.

The celebration won’t stop there.

The next single from the album will be “Un Poco Loca,” featuring pop star Paula DeAnda alongside rising Austin hip-hop artist Dezi Stormz, blending Tejano, pop, and hip-hop influences into another example of Alfredo Guerrero’s vision for a modern Tortilla Factory.

Paula DeAnda made history as the first Latina signed by legendary music executive Clive Davis to Arista Records. Davis—known for discovering Whitney Houston and numerous other superstars—reportedly signed DeAnda immediately after hearing her perform. She went on to chart three songs on the Billboard Hot 100, including her Top 20 hit “Walk Away,” which peaked at No. 18.

Meanwhile, Dezi Stormz has quickly emerged as one of Texas’ fastest-rising independent hip-hop artists. Known for her confident lyricism and melodic hooks, she has built an impressive catalog with releases including Favorite Eater, One Of Them Ones, POPPED, OMG, and GIMME DAT, while attracting millions of followers across social media.

The anniversary collection also includes a collaboration with Tejano legend David Lee Garza on “Prieta Linda”, as well as three performances featuring Marcus Daniels, better known to fans as “The Midnight Mariachi.”

During an interview with Tejano Nation Radio host Romeo, Guerrero said assembling the project became both a celebration and a labor of love.

“So I just wanted to let the world know that we’ve officially released Tortilla Factory’s 50th anniversary album. A lot of world-renowned artists featured on the album. We are still keeping it to the roots of Tejano Chicano and got a lot of cumbias and rancheras on there.”

Guerrero revealed the opening track also represents a historic milestone for the band.

“The first song is kind of historical as well because it’s the first song that Tortilla Factory’s ever released that doesn’t have horns and it also has an accordion. It’s featuring J.R. Gomez and Max Baca.”

The project also pays tribute to the band’s rich history by featuring Marcos Daniels performing several songs associated with legendary Tortilla Factory vocalist Bobby “El Charro Negro” Butler, who passed away in 2016.

“I also have, you know, El Nuevo Charro Negro, if you will. Midnight Mariachi, Marcus Daniels, singing a lot of Charro’s hits.”

Among the album’s other standout collaborations is a duet of “Somos Novios” featuring Paula DeAnda and Gilbert DeAnda, as well as additional crossover collaborations Guerrero says showcase the band’s willingness to explore new musical territory while respecting its Tejano roots.

For Alfredo Guerrero, the album represents much more than another recording project.

It arrives after years marked by unimaginable personal tragedy. In 2020, Guerrero lost both his daughter and granddaughter in a devastating automobile accident. Earlier, the Tortilla Factory family mourned the passing of longtime vocalist Bobby Butler, one of the band’s most beloved voices.

Despite those heartbreaking losses, Guerrero has continued carrying forward the vision established by his father.

Founded in 1973 in San Angelo, Texas, by trumpeter Tony “Ham” Guerrero, Tortilla Factory became one of Tejano music’s most innovative acts. The three-time Grammy-nominated band combined driving rhythms, rock influences, and powerful horn arrangements into an explosive sound that helped redefine the genre.

Following Tony Guerrero’s death from complications related to diabetes in January 2011, Alfredo Antonio Guerrero assumed leadership of the band, gradually evolving its sound into what he describes as an urban Tejano style while preserving the musical identity that generations of fans have embraced.

Reflecting on reaching the remarkable milestone, Guerrero says the emotions behind the album are impossible to describe.

“There’s a lot of happy feelings. There’s a lot of sad feelings. There’s a lot of tears and tears of joy and then also a dream come true because, you know, not too many institutional bands and legacies make it this far, so it’s a very special feeling.”

He added that the anniversary album represents exactly what Tortilla Factory has always stood for.

“Tortilla Factory 50th anniversary album, all on digital platforms, a lot of world-renowned featured artists and at the same time keeping the roots of our own Chicana, Tejana with a lot of cumbias and rancheras as well as crossover music.”

Five decades after Tony “Ham” Guerrero launched the band with a bold new sound, Tortilla Factory’s golden anniversary album stands as both a tribute to its legendary past and a declaration that its story is far from over.
