The official music video for “Goodbye Texas Tornado” has made its long-awaited premiere, giving fans a heartfelt visual tribute to one of Texas music’s greatest legends, the late Flaco Jiménez. The powerful collaboration from Pete AstudilloChris PérezLouie TheSinger, and Los Texmaniacs debuted during the closing ceremony for the exhibition From the West Side to the World: Un Homenaje a Flaco Jiménez in San Antonio, marking one year since the Grammy-winning accordion icon’s passing.

The song and accompanying video serve as a musical farewell to Jiménez while celebrating the groundbreaking legacy of the Texas Tornados, the legendary supergroup that forever changed the sound of Tex-Mex music.

For Astudillo, the project began from a deeply personal moment.

Speaking on The Bo Corona Show, the Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter recalled learning of Jiménez’s passing while already grieving the impending loss of his aunt.

“I was sitting in my little TV room when I got the news that Flaco passed,” Astudillo said. “Then I just said, ‘Goodbye, Texas Tornado,’ and when I said those words, I felt something. It just had a nice ring to it.”

The inspiration came instantly.

“I literally had this song written before he was buried,” Astudillo revealed.

Originally envisioned as a simple tribute, the recording quickly evolved into a larger production. Astudillo enlisted Grammy-winning conjunto group Los Texmaniacs to help capture the unmistakable spirit of the Texas Tornados, whose original lineup included Flaco Jiménez, Doug Sahm, Freddy Fender, and Augie Meyers.

Chris Pérez, who previously collaborated with Astudillo on the Selena tribute “El Ritmo Se Acabó,” immediately wanted to be involved after hearing the demo. Pérez later suggested adding country artist Louie TheSinger, bringing another musical dimension to the project.

Rather than piecing the recording together remotely, Astudillo insisted everyone record together in one room.

“We recorded old school,” he said. “Everybody together in the room. There was such a great vibe and great energy.”

One of the session’s most emotional moments came when Flaco’s son, Arturo Jiménez, unexpectedly visited the studio.

According to Astudillo, Arturo became emotional after hearing the musicians perform.

“He was literally in tears,” Astudillo recalled. “He told us, ‘You don’t understand how happy I am that you guys are doing this for my father.’ To get that approval from the family—it was just amazing.”

The newly released music video complements the song’s message, pairing heartfelt performances with imagery that honors Jiménez’s extraordinary life and influence on generations of musicians. Premiering during the exhibition’s closing ceremony added another layer of significance, as family, friends, fellow artists, and fans gathered to celebrate the San Antonio native’s remarkable legacy.

In addition to the song, Astudillo and the group filmed a music video throughout San Antonio, intentionally making the city part of the storytelling.

“I wanted San Antonio to be a character,” he explained. “When people watch the video, they’re going to see San Antonio as a character itself.”

Although inspired by Flaco Jiménez, Astudillo says the project grew into something much larger.

“It started as a tribute to Flaco, but as it came together, I realized it really represents all of the Texas Tornados,” he explained.

The song pays homage not only to Jiménez but also to fellow Texas Tornados members Doug Sahm, Freddy Fender, and the late Augie Meyers.

“It’s a tribute to Flaco, a tribute to the Texas Tornados, a tribute to music,” Astudillo said. “I’m just blessed that I get to do it.”

Now available on streaming platforms alongside its official music video, “Goodbye Texas Tornado” stands as a moving celebration of a musical pioneer whose accordion changed the sound of Texas forever while reminding listeners that the spirit of Flaco Jiménez—and the music he inspired—will continue to live on for generations.
