After nearly five decades as the unmistakable voice of Oscar De La Rosa, the Tejano icon is officially embarking on a historic new journey — as a solo artist.
The legendary frontman recently revealed the cover art and release date for his highly anticipated debut solo album, Si Fueran Mías, marking the first full-length project of his career recorded outside the banner of La Mafia, the groundbreaking group he co-founded in Houston in 1980.
Fans first got a taste of the project in February with the premiere of the lead single, “Me Gusta Estar Contigo,” a romantic and polished performance that showcased De La Rosa’s unmistakable voice in a fresh yet familiar setting. Produced by longtime collaborator Armando Lichtenberger Jr., the album represents a major artistic milestone for the singer whose voice helped define generations of Tejano music.
During a recent interview with Bo Corona on Fierro HD, De La Rosa opened up about the significance of stepping outside the La Mafia name for the very first time.
“I had never done an album without La Mafia,” he said. “This is going to be my first album without La Mafia.”
While the project carries his name alone, De La Rosa emphasized that the creative process remained deeply collaborative — a reflection of the decades-long chemistry between him and Lichtenberger.
“It was my ideas with his ideas,” he explained. “We did real live strings — no keyboard strings. It’s all real live musicians.”
That dedication to authentic musicianship shines throughout Si Fueran Mías, a collection of songs originally made famous by other artists that De La Rosa personally selected and reimagined in his own signature style. The album title, which translates to “If They Were Mine,” perfectly captures the spirit of the project: beloved classics interpreted through one of Tejano music’s most recognizable and celebrated voices.
The release also underscores the enduring creative partnership between De La Rosa and Lichtenberger, who have spent 46 years shaping the sound and legacy of La Mafia. Together, they have delivered dozens of chart-topping hits, earned Grammy and Latin Grammy recognition, and cemented their status as pioneers in Tejano music history.
Even with this new solo venture, La Mafia continues to thrive. The band is currently celebrating its Epic Tour 46, commemorating 46 years of music with sold-out performances across the United States and Mexico. In 2024, the group also expanded its brand with the launch of its own premium tequila line.
Now, with Si Fueran Mías due out May 29, Oscar De La Rosa is proving that even after decades at the top, there are still new dreams to chase and new chapters to write.
