WASHINGTON, D.C. — In a heartfelt tribute to one of South Texas’ most beloved icons, Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz (TX-15) has introduced the Selena Commemorative Coin Act in honor of “Selena Day” and the legendary life and legacy of Selena Quintanilla-Pérez.
Known around the world as the “Queen of Tejano,” Selena’s impact on music, culture, and representation for Latinos in America continues to grow nearly three decades after her untimely passing. The proposed legislation would instruct the United States Mint to issue a commemorative coin celebrating Selena’s contributions to American history and culture.
“Selena Quintanilla-Pérez is remembered as ‘The Queen of Tejano’ for her passion, talent, and music that changed the industry forever,” said Congresswoman De La Cruz. “Selena inspired millions by elevating Tejano music to the mainstream and shattering glass ceilings. Honoring her with a coin is more than symbolic, it’s a step forward in recognizing her contributions to American history and keeping her memory alive for generations.”
The announcement coincides with April 16, widely recognized as “Selena Day”, which would have marked Selena’s 54th birthday. Rising to fame in the early 1990s, Selena captivated fans with her chart-topping albums like Amor Prohibido and the posthumous crossover hit Dreaming of You.
Despite her life being tragically cut short at age 23, Selena’s legacy endures through a Grammy Award, a Hollywood Walk of Fame star, and the hearts of millions who continue to be inspired by her music and story.
If passed, the Selena Commemorative Coin Act would not only serve as a tribute to a cultural icon but also as a permanent symbol of the enduring influence Selena has had on American music and Latino identity.
