For more than a decade, Leo Alvarado has built a loyal following with Leo Y Temptacion through energetic live performances across Texas and the Southwest. But with the release of Cuanto Más, Alvarado has reached a milestone that had been years in the making—his very first full-length album.

During an interview with Tejano Nation Radio host Romeo, Alvarado shared the story behind the 12-track project, explaining that the album represents both his musical journey and his growth as a songwriter.

“We released it in December so we could have it out before the end of the year,” Alvarado said. “That was our very first album. We’ve never done an album before. There are 12 songs on it, and I think six of them are songs that I wrote, and the rest are covers.”

While Cuanto Más includes fresh Tejano interpretations of classics originally recorded by artists such as Pedro Fernández and other Latin music favorites, Alvarado says the heart of the album lies in the original songs he began writing over the last two years.

Turning Life Into Lyrics

For Alvarado, songwriting isn’t about creating fictional stories—it’s about documenting real emotions.

“A lot of the songs that I write are everyday life for me,” he told Romeo. “You’ve been married to your wife 40 years, and sometimes it feels like things are going downhill or you’re worried about where things are headed. I’m writing the songs based on how I’m feeling.”

That honesty shines throughout the album, particularly on three standout tracks that showcase Alvarado’s storytelling.

“El Final”

One of the album’s most emotional moments is “El Final,” a heartbreaking ballad about realizing a relationship has reached its end.

Alvarado explained that the song was inspired by the uncertainty and emotional distance that can develop over time in a long marriage.

“It’s just the way I was feeling at the time,” he said. “It’s about knowing there’s no love left in someone’s heart and realizing it’s better to say goodbye than keep hurting each other.”

The song features production by Mario Ortiz, whose arrangement complements the raw emotion behind Alvarado’s lyrics.

“Entre Dos Amores”

Another fan favorite is “Entre Dos Amores,” which tells the story of choosing genuine love over wealth and material possessions.

Rather than drawing from personal experience, Alvarado found inspiration while watching a telenovela.

“I saw it on a novela,” he laughed. “It’s about choosing between a rich girl and a poor girl. I end up with the poor girl because she gives me love for free. The rich girl always wants something—you can never make her happy.”

The playful storyline gives the album a lighter moment while still reflecting classic Tejano storytelling traditions.

“Cuanto Más”

The album’s title track may be its most personal.

Alvarado wrote “Cuanto Más” as an honest reflection on asking difficult questions within a long-term relationship.

“‘Cuanto Más’ is basically asking, ‘How much longer are we going to keep doing this? How much longer are we going to keep pretending everything is okay?'”

The song’s emotional depth made it the natural choice to serve as both the album title and centerpiece of the project.

“I wrote that one too,” Alvarado said. “It just felt like the right song to represent the whole album.”

A Blend of Originals and Reinvented Classics

While Alvarado has embraced songwriting, he also wanted his debut album to honor some of the music that influenced him growing up.

Several tracks transform familiar songs into fresh Tejano arrangements, including “Mi Forma de Sentir,” “Linda Morenita,” “Nada Cambiará,” and “Dime Mi Amor.”

Instead of recreating previous versions, Alvarado challenged his musicians and collaborators to give each song a new identity.

For “Linda Morenita,” he enlisted Gary Hobbs keyboardist Gabriel Gil to completely reimagine the arrangement.

“I wanted it to sound more Tejano,” Alvarado explained. “Everybody does it the same way. I wanted ours to sound different.”

The approach has resonated with fans, especially on “Nada Cambiará,” which has become one of the band’s most-streamed recordings.

Building Momentum

Although Cuanto Más is Leo Y Temptacion’s debut album, the band itself has spent more than a decade performing throughout Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Kansas, and Colorado.

Alvarado said the group has appeared alongside respected acts including La Maquinaria Norteña while also performing at festivals, private events, and the Tejano Music Awards Fan Fair.

“We’ve been together 11 years now,” he said. “Little by little, we’re getting somewhere with it.”

The veteran performer also revealed that the album has been submitted for consideration to both the Tejano Music Awards and the Latin Grammy Awards.

“Even if I’m nominated, I’ll be happy,” Alvarado said. “The Tejano Music Awards are the ones I grew up with.”

Already Looking Ahead

The debut album may still be introducing Leo Y Temptacion to new audiences, but Alvarado isn’t slowing down.

He revealed during the interview that he has already written another dozen songs and is back in the studio recording with Chris Salinas, drummer for Los Fugitivos.

Among the upcoming releases is a duet titled “Dímelo” featuring Jennifer Lynn, along with an emotional original called “Yo Te Veo.”

Inspired by the story of a woman escaping domestic abuse, Alvarado believes “Yo Te Veo” could become one of the most meaningful songs he has ever written.

“I can’t wait to get that one out,” he said. “It’s going to be a beautiful song.”

Before launching his recording career, Alvarado spent decades as a DJ beginning at age 13 before retiring from the profession in 2010. He has also appeared in the Tejano Film Festival movie The Bookie and in multiple episodes of The Cleto Show. Away from music, he owns L.A. Custom Interiors, a San Antonio business he has operated for more than 25 years.

Now 58 years old, married for four decades, and the father of four children, Alvarado says every life experience—from family and business to travel and even learning to fly airplanes—has influenced the songs he writes.

With Cuanto Más, Leo Y Temptacion delivers more than a debut album. It introduces an artist unafraid to wear his heart on his sleeve, creating songs rooted in love, heartbreak, hope, and the everyday moments that connect with Tejano fans everywhere.
