James “Jaime” DeAnda, the longtime Tejano musician and former frontman of Jaime y Los Chamacos, was arrested over the weekend on a warrant issued out of Jim Wells County, according to reports from El Chisme 361.
The media outlet reported that DeAnda was taken into custody Saturday and booked into the Brooks County Jail. Court documents obtained by the publication indicate the warrant stemmed from DeAnda’s failure to appear at a scheduled court hearing on May 19, 2026, before Judge Rumaldo Solis involving a Motion for Enforcement and Contempt of Court.
Authorities initially held DeAnda on a $5,000 cash bond while awaiting transfer to Jim Wells County. An update released by El Chisme 361 later confirmed that DeAnda posted bond and has since been released from custody.
According to court filings referenced in the report, the contempt allegations are tied to claims that DeAnda continued using the name “Jaime y Los Chamacos” to book performances and promote concerts despite previous court orders prohibiting him from doing so. The filings also allege that DeAnda continued asserting ownership of the name, a matter that has been at the center of a lengthy legal dispute.
Ownership Battle Continues
The latest development follows a formal statement issued by Los Chamacos in January 2026 addressing what the band described as ongoing misinformation regarding ownership and use of the names “Jaime y Los Chamacos” and “Los Chamacos.”
According to the group, ownership and exclusive rights to both names were legally awarded to Roel Joslin following a trial held on August 12, 2025, in Jim Wells County Court at Law.

The dispute dates back to June 2019, when Joslin filed a lawsuit against DeAnda alleging breach of contract and other claims. After hearing testimony and reviewing evidence, the court ruled in Joslin’s favor, according to the band’s statement.
The judgment reportedly awarded Joslin ownership rights to the business names and ordered DeAnda to pay $250,000 in damages. Court orders also permanently restrained DeAnda from claiming ownership of or using the “Jaime y Los Chamacos” trade name for personal benefit.
Los Chamacos further revealed that DeAnda filed federal trademark applications in May 2025 for both “Jaime y Los Chamacos” and “Los Chamacos” with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The band stated that no trademarks had been granted and that legal counsel had been retained to oppose the applications.
The group maintains that its efforts are intended to protect the band’s legacy and prevent confusion among fans, promoters, venues, and the public.
DeAnda Defends His Connection to the Name
DeAnda has publicly disputed claims that he has no rights to the historic name.
In a statement released earlier this year, he argued that the band’s identity evolved through several stages over more than four decades, beginning as Los Chamacos de Raúl DeAnda before becoming Los Chamacos and eventually Jaime y Los Chamacos as he emerged as the group’s frontman, accordionist, vocalist, and creative leader.
“This name has been part of my life and career since 1978,” DeAnda said. “It represents my music, my work, and my legacy. I remain committed to honoring the history of the band and the fans who have supported us for so many years.”
Founded in 1978, Jaime y Los Chamacos became one of the most influential and recognizable names in Tejano music, helping shape the modern conjunto-Tejano sound while building a loyal fan base across generations.
Looking Ahead
While DeAnda has now posted bond and been released, the latest arrest adds another chapter to an ongoing legal battle that has drawn significant attention throughout the Tejano music community.
As enforcement proceedings continue and trademark challenges remain unresolved, questions surrounding the future use of the Jaime y Los Chamacos name persist. What remains undisputed, however, is the band’s lasting impact on Tejano music history and its influence on generations of artists and fans.
