Lopez Broadcasting has officially launched a new public awareness campaign through KLMO K ALAMO Tejano 98.9/92.1 FM titled “Champions Celebrate Safely,” aimed at keeping San Antonio fans protected during high-energy street celebrations tied to the San Antonio Spurs postseason run.

The campaign officially went last week and will run throughout the NBA Finals series, delivering public service announcements across Southside, Westside, and Downtown San Antonio as crowds gather to celebrate potential Spurs victories.

“We want our Spurs fans to have a great time—but be responsible”

Carlos Lopez, owner of KLMO, emphasized the importance of public safety during large-scale celebrations across the city.

“It is imperative that we bring awareness to our community of the dangers when participating in these parades with an abundance of vehicles moving at any given time, it is unsafe to be on top of vehicles or in the back of trucks. To be vigilant and aware of pedestrians in the streets and to bring awareness about being reckless that can bring harm to innocent bystanders or passengers. We want our Spurs fans to have a great time but to be responsible and aware of the dangers and to be vigilant at all times and respectful to one another.”

“We can’t afford to lose another life”

Humberto Lopez, operations manager for the station, said the campaign is deeply personal for the team and rooted in community protection.

“All my brothers were born in this beautiful city, and all we want is to keep everyone safe. And this P.S.A., we hope will bring awareness that we truly want everyone to enjoy this beautiful journey. We can’t afford to lose another life or any injuries anymore.”

Message runs throughout the NBA Finals

Carlos Lopez added that the PSA will continue airing throughout the Finals as spontaneous street celebrations take place whenever the Spurs secure wins.

The message remains simple and direct: “Please party responsibly—San Antonio.”

A call for safer celebrations after recent tragedy

The campaign also follows a heartbreaking incident involving 17-year-old Spurs fan Jose Luis “Joey” Rodriguez III, who tragically died after falling from a moving vehicle during a postseason “honking celebration.”

The accident occurred on the evening of Thursday, May 28, on the 300 block of West Dickson Avenue near Southwest Military Drive, as fans gathered across the city to celebrate the Spurs’ Western Conference Finals victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The tragedy has led to increased safety messaging, stronger crowd control efforts, and heightened officer presence from the San Antonio Police Department during postseason gatherings.

Authorities and community leaders are urging fans to celebrate safely—staying inside vehicles, wearing seatbelts, avoiding truck beds or exterior frames, and remaining alert in crowded street environments.

As San Antonio rallies behind its team, the message from Lopez Broadcasting remains focused on unity, joy, and above all—protection of life during one of the city’s most electric sports moments.
