As he approaches an emotional Mother’s Day weekend performance, Tejano icon Gary Hobbs is balancing celebration, reflection, and gratitude.
In a candid interview with The Bo Corona Show, the legendary singer opened up about his ever-growing Gary Hobbs & Friends Cruise, shared hard-earned advice for emerging artists, and paid heartfelt tribute to his late mother, Anne McLemore Hobbs, who passed away in March.

A Cruise Built on Music and Community
What started as hesitation has turned into one of the most anticipated events for Tejano fans nationwide. Hobbs admitted he was once “terrified” of cruises—but that quickly changed.
Now heading into its eighth edition, the Gary Hobbs Family and Friends Cruise has become a floating celebration of Tejano music and culture.
“We started calling it ‘Family and Friends’ from day one,” Hobbs said. “We’ve had people from about 32 different states… and everybody becomes family.”
Unlike traditional music cruises, Hobbs and his wife Diana Hobbs personally curate the experience—from booking artists to planning events. The result is a fan-first atmosphere centered around dancing, connection, and nonstop entertainment.
Cruise #8 will take place aboard Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas from January 31 to February 7, 2027, with stops in Roatán, Costa Maya, and Cozumel. The lineup already includes Stefani Montiel, Lili Bella, Gabriel Zavala, David Olivarez, Texas Latino, Da Krazy Pimpz, and more.
With themed parties, multiple nightly dances, and a massive dance floor converted from an ice rink, Hobbs says the focus remains simple: “They’re all there for one common ground—to enjoy Tejano music.”
Advice for the Next Generation
With more than four decades in the industry, Hobbs didn’t sugarcoat his advice for up-and-coming artists.
“You better have thick skin,” he said. “You better have an attorney, a good accountant… and you better be practicing.”
He emphasized the importance of stepping away from social media distractions and putting in real work.
“You’ve got to get out of that phone… and find your own niche,” Hobbs explained. “The most wonderful part is getting out there, meeting people—they become your family and support system.”
He also stressed the value of original music, noting that today’s artists have more access than ever to create and stand out.
A Son’s Tribute
The most powerful moment of the interview came when Hobbs spoke about his mother, whose influence shaped not only his career, but his identity as a performer.
“My mom was the one that pushed me into music,” he shared emotionally.
Anne McLemore Hobbs was a singer herself, once aspiring to study opera. Though she never pursued it professionally, she passed her passion—and discipline—on to her son.
From correcting his pronunciation as a teen to instilling performance rituals like warming up and wearing cologne before shows, her presence remains deeply embedded in his routine.
“There’s not a performance that I don’t… worry about pronunciation or prepare,” Hobbs said. “Never.”
In one of the interview’s most touching moments, Hobbs recalled his final conversation with his mother and the moments before her passing.
“I told her everything was going to be alright… that there was going to be a celebration in heaven,” he said.
Now, every time he steps on stage, he carries her memory with him.
“For three weeks now, I’ve been thinking on stage that my mom’s watching me… and now I can’t fool her.”
Music, Legacy, and Moving Forward
Even in grief, Hobbs continues to do what he believes his mother would have wanted—perform.
Just one day after her funeral, he honored a scheduled show, saying she would have been “disappointed” if he didn’t.
That same dedication will be on display this Friday, May 8, when Hobbs takes the stage for a free concert at Texas Rodeo Saloon in Katy, Texas—just days before Mother’s Day.
It’s a full-circle moment for an artist celebrating 43 years in Tejano music, still driven by love, family, and the fans who’ve supported him every step of the way.
From timeless hits like “Las Miradas” to his latest album Soy Libre on Freddie Records, Gary Hobbs continues to prove why he remains one of the genre’s most enduring voices.
And now more than ever, every note carries deeper meaning.
