
Rancho Alegre, the grassroots Austin nonprofit dedicated to preserving and promoting Conjunto music known for its long-form interviews and three-day Rancho Alegre Conjunto Music Festival, returns to terrestrial radio on KEDA with a weekly show Saturday afternoons at 5pm.
The show will feature a variety of selections from the organization’s vast collection of music, from new releases to classics to rare recordings that they have preserved and digitized themselves from vinyl and other analog sources.
“We have so much great music that we have preserved, it only makes sense to share it with the listeners of this iconic station,” says Rancho Alegre Executive Director/Head Queso Baldomero “El Parrandero” Cuellar. “It is a dream come true for us to join this lineup and we appreciate the opportunity that KEDA owner Jerry Benavides has given us.”
The show will also periodically include Rancho Alegre’s interviews, which are also part of its preservation mission. Since 2011, Cuellar and his partner Piper LeMoine have traveled all over the state collecting long-form intimate interviews with Conjunto and Tejano artists. These interviews, which have often been the only available and recorded for some artists, were then posted to the organization’s website as sort of a proto-podcast. The interviews are being transitioned to a formal podcast this summer.
The August 2nd two-hour premiere of the show featured the Rancho Alegre interview with Flaco Jimenez recorded in 2016, paying tribute to the Conjunto icon.
Rancho Alegre airs Saturdays at 5pm on KEDA Radio 99.9FM/1540 AM in the San Antonio area, online at jalapenoradio.com and on the KEDA app.
