LUBBOCK, TX — Electro-cumbia artist DJ Sancho, also known as Charles Sanchez, was sentenced to two years in prison with 10 years of probation on Tuesday after a Lubbock jury found him guilty last week of three counts of indecency with a child.
A hearing was held before sentencing without the jury present as defense attorneys for Sanchez motioned for a mistrial after several jurors were caught on social media, violating court orders to abstain from it to avoid the risk of bias, EverythingLubbock.com reports. Jurors were spoken to individually about the incident.
The jury took just over an hour to decide the punishment for the 37-year-old DJ and producer after he was found guilty of indecency with two girls, one being younger than 14 years old. He was originally indicted in October 2019 and re-indicted in November.
The arrest warrant for Sanchez contains witness statements that accused him of pressuring the under-14-year-old into consuming alcohol, getting into bed with her, touching her breasts, and encouraging her to take off her bra. He was also accused of touching a girl under the age of 17 inappropriately below the waist, over her clothing.
DJ Sancho was taken into custody and booked into the Lubbock County Detention Center on Tuesday to begin his prison sentence.
The Lubbock, Texas-based artist was a rising star in electro-cumbia, one of the fastest-growing music genres. DJ Sancho rose to fame with the release of the hit song “Tokyo Cumbia” in 2013. His last release was “Mi Vida Loca” in May 2019.
