Roger Velasquez & The Latin Legendz focus on current issues affecting Latinos in the world today with the new album Visión 20/20.
Visión 20/20 is a labor of love, jam-packed with Chicano soul delivering a rhythmic drive that draws on traditional orchestra Chicana with a Tex-Mex flair. The trumpets, trombones, and saxophones pack a punch. It’s a magic carpet ride through time and space, with waves that move to the flow of a lush Latin
beat.
“The album features an array of different styles of Tejano music, from the traditional orquesta Tejana style to like a cumbia style,” Velasquez tells Tejano Nation. “It even touches on like a country blues style, Conjunto, and then it goes into a Chicano style. It’s 51% Tejano but there’s also tracks on the album that go into an R&B feel or even like into an American roots blues type of feel.”
The album’s first single, “Somos Ganadores,” composed by Velasquez, and co-arranged by a former member of Fania All-Stars, Jorge “Georgie” Padilla, was released at the beginning of this year and quickly became one of the most popular YouTube hits by the San Antonio recording artist.
The album is Velasquez’s perspective of life as an American of Mexican descent in the 21st century. In “Amor Del Otro Lado,” Velasquez addresses the immigration issue through a glass-half-full perspective, where love overcomes all obstacles. “Botellas de Tequila” addresses the alcoholism and drug addiction that plagues our communities. “Somos Ganadores” is a celebration of life and triumph. “Entierrenme en Tejas/Bury Me in Texas” illustrates what it means to be a descendant of Mexican immigrants, living the American dream. “Cryin’ Over You” expresses his deep feelings of grief after the loss of a loved one.
“It’s all about diversity and pushing that envelope, pushing the boundaries of Tejano beyond the polka, Conjunto, Norteno trip,” added Velasquez. “Tejanos, our upbringing, musically is American music. In my opinion, we’re a combination of the Mexican, which is the ranchera Mexicana, mixed with our Amercian influence, which is the influences of rock, blues, jazz and country. This record has all of those elements.”
Visión 20/20 is the follow-up to Tex Mex Funk, an album that received the Latin Grammy award for Best Tejano Album in 2018 for Velasquez. It is available on all digital music platforms. Learn more about Roger Velasquez and The Latin Legendz at the official website RogerVelasquez.com.
