For more than four decades, Ram Herrera has filled dance floors with his music and built a lasting bond with generations of Tejano fans.

At 66, the San Antonio Tejano legend is now facing one of the most challenging chapters of his life — and he’s doing it with the same determination that has carried him through a career spanning more than 40 years.

Soon after marrying his wife, Lizé, Herrera was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic prostate cancer, a life-changing development that forced the newlyweds to put some of their plans on hold. But rather than allowing cancer to take over their lives, the couple made a decision to continue living, loving and creating memories together.

That journey is captured in “Still On Stage,” a feature from SurvivorNet’s Men Beating the Odds series that follows Herrera as he navigates his cancer journey and returns to the stage with Lizé by his side.

A Diagnosis That Changed Everything

Herrera publicly revealed his prostate cancer diagnosis in September 2025, describing the news as “scary but treatable” while expressing his faith in his doctors and gratitude for the prayers and support he received from fans, friends and family.

The diagnosis came just months after what Lizé describes as a “fairytale dream” wedding.

After spending years singing about love, Herrera suddenly found himself living through a very different kind of love story — one tested by uncertainty, treatment and the fear that comes with an advanced cancer diagnosis.

Lizé, who also serves as Herrera’s manager, made it clear that she would be there for him.

“I wanted him to know I was there for him and I was going to be by his side every step of the way.”

Herrera completed radiation treatment in February 2026, but the couple’s journey continues.

“We’re still going through it,” Herrera says in the feature.

Lizé Finds Strength in Seeing Ram Perform

For Lizé, watching her husband return to the stage has been an especially powerful experience.

“When I see my husband on stage, I mean, he turns into somebody completely different, right? And it’s a blessing,” she says. “I love to see him out there. I love the way his fans love him.”

That connection with his audience has been a defining part of Herrera’s career.

After more than four decades of performing, he wanted to get back to the fans who had grown with him and supported his music throughout the years.

“I still got a life in me,” Ram says. “I think I have a little bit left in the tank and I’m going to give it my best.”

That determination is at the heart of Still On Stage, which follows Herrera from the venue and backstage to the stage itself as he performs for his fans.

Among the songs featured is his first bilingual country single release, “Just One Time,” a song about holding onto the people we love — a message that carries even greater meaning for Herrera and Lizé today.

“When you find someone, you hold onto them,” Ram says.

Lizé echoes that message: “Always take the time to tell that person you love them.”

Faith, Family and the Power of Encouragement

Herrera’s journey has also been deeply connected to his faith. During difficult moments, Lizé would leave encouraging messages on the mirror to help lift his spirits.

“God wants you to get up today,” and “God wants you to do this,” were among the reminders she would leave for him.

“I need that,” Herrera says. “I need to be reminded. I need to be reminded that God is there. She reminds me of that.”

A father of five and grandfather of eight, Herrera has also leaned on his family, friends and fans throughout his journey. Their prayers, phone calls and encouragement have become an important part of his recovery and outlook.

“Cancer Became Part of My Story”

Following the release of the SurvivorNet feature, Herrera shared a heartfelt reflection on social media about what the experience has taught him.

“Cancer changes your life, but we made a decision that it was not going to become our entire life,” Herrera wrote.

He acknowledged the difficult days, fear and uncertainty that came with his diagnosis, while emphasizing the importance of surrounding himself with faith, positivity, love and people who remind him that there is still more life to live.

The couple continued to travel, laugh and make memories together. Herrera also continued doing the things he loves most — fishing, singing and performing.

“Sitting down and talking about my journey with prostate cancer reminded me just how blessed I am to still be here,” he wrote.

Herrera also thanked SurvivorNet’s Katerina Rose, who traveled from New York to San Antonio to tell his story, along with Matt Colbourn, JD Macias and Ricky Cortez. He expressed particular gratitude to his family, friends, and fans who prayed for him, checked on him and encouraged him throughout his battle.

“Cancer became part of my story, but it did not become the end of my story,” Herrera wrote.

A Message to Men: Get Checked

Herrera has also embraced an opportunity to use his experience to encourage greater awareness of prostate cancer. He knows firsthand how easy it can be to put off getting checked, and he now urges men to take their health seriously and talk with their doctors about prostate cancer screening and early detection.

By speaking openly about his own diagnosis, fear and treatment, Herrera hopes other men will feel less alone and be encouraged to take action.

His story is ultimately about more than cancer. It is about appreciating life, embracing the people who stand beside you and refusing to stop living because circumstances have changed.

“It makes you realize how valuable life is,” Herrera says. “I’m grateful for life, basically.”

Still Singing, Still Performing, Still Living

For Ram Herrera, music remains one of the greatest expressions of that gratitude. His career has taken him across generations of Tejano music, from countless dance floors and weddings to stages where fans continue to sing along with the songs that have become part of their lives.

Now, with Lizé beside him, Herrera is creating a new chapter.

In his social-media message, he saved some of his most personal words for his wife, crediting her faith, positivity and love with helping him through some of his toughest moments.

“I believe God placed her in my life at the right time,” he wrote. “She brought a special light into my life, inspires me, and somehow makes me want to sing all day long.”

“Lizé, I am blessed to have you. I love you dearly.”

And while his cancer journey is not over, Herrera’s message remains one of hope.

“Keep the faith and keep God first. Always.”

He ended his message with a hopeful health update: “PSA levels are down.”

For a Tejano artist who has spent more than 40 years bringing people together through music, perhaps the most powerful performance is the one he is living now — choosing love, faith, family and music while continuing to step onto the stage.

Ram Herrera is still on stage.
