Tortilla Factory’s Alfredo Antonio Guerrero Reimagines ‘Si Te Vas Baby’ for a New Generation

AUSTIN, TEXAS — Some songs stay with an artist long after the recording is finished. For Alfredo Antonio Guerrero, leader and lead vocalist of legendary Austin-based Chicano/Tejano group Tortilla Factory, “Si Te Vas Baby” is one of those songs.

Originally recorded in 2010 for Tortilla Factory’s second GRAMMY-nominated album, the song has remained a personal challenge for Guerrero. More than a decade after the original recording, he returned to the song to record the vocals again — this time with a different perspective, a deeper connection to the lyrics, and a renewed determination to push himself as a vocalist.

“Si Te Vas Baby has always been one of the most challenging songs I’ve ever had to sing in my musical career,” Guerrero shared.

The song was originally released as part of Tortilla Factory’s 2011 album Cookin’ and was written by Jerry Lopez, David Richardson, and Carlos Perez.

For Guerrero, revisiting the song also meant revisiting the work of one of his musical heroes.

He studied the original vocal performance by Jerry Lopez, who not only sang the original version but was also one of the song’s co-writers. Guerrero says Lopez’s phrasing, emotion, and execution gave him a new perspective on how he could approach the song.

“Listening to his phrasing, emotion, and execution inspired me to dig deeper into the meaning of every line and really challenge myself vocally,” Guerrero said.

Rather than simply recreate the original performance, Guerrero wanted to bring something new to the song.

His goal was a vocal delivery that was more soulful, precise, and emotionally connected than his original recording.

“I wanted my delivery this time to be more soulful, more precise, and more emotionally connected than my original recording,” he explained.

The result is a new interpretation of a song Guerrero has carried with him for years — one that reflects not only his growth as a singer, but also the different place in life from which he now approaches the material.

“I can honestly say I’m extremely proud of how these vocals came out. There are certain songs that push you as a singer, and this is definitely one of them.”

A New Chapter for Tortilla Factory

Guerrero’s return to “Si Te Vas Baby” comes during another important chapter in the history of Tortilla Factory.

A three-time GRAMMY-nominated lead vocalist and producer, Guerrero became the leader of the iconic group following the passing of his father and Tortilla Factory founder, Tony “Ham” Guerrero, in January 2011.

Under Alfredo Antonio Guerrero’s leadership, Tortilla Factory has continued the musical legacy established by his father while incorporating a broad range of influences, including traditional Tex-Mex, rancheras, urban beats, and Latin jazz.

The group recently celebrated its legacy with a massive 22-track 50th anniversary collection, featuring collaborations and appearances from prominent Tejano and conjunto musicians including David Lee Garza, Max Baca, and JR Gomez.

That ongoing evolution makes Guerrero’s new take on “Si Te Vas Baby” particularly fitting. The song is rooted in Tortilla Factory’s history, but this new vocal performance represents where its longtime lead singer is today.

“A song I’ve lived with for years… now sung from a completely different place in my life.”

For Guerrero, “Si Te Vas Baby” is more than a revisit of a classic Tortilla Factory recording. It is an opportunity to look back at where he was as a vocalist, learn from the artists who inspired him, and bring a new emotional perspective to a song that has remained part of his musical journey for years.
