Texas country artist Matt Castillo is paying tribute to one of South Texas’ most influential musical pioneers with his new rendition of Freddy Fender’s iconic classic, “Before the Next Teardrop Falls.”

Released September 18, Castillo’s interpretation connects two generations of South Texas country music while honoring the lasting influence of Fender, the legendary Rio Grande Valley native who helped open doors for Hispanic artists in country music.

Growing up in Edinburg, Texas, Castillo was surrounded by Fender’s music and developed an appreciation for the artist’s place in Texas and country music history. For Castillo, recording “Before the Next Teardrop Falls” offered an opportunity to revisit a song that has been part of his life for years while adding his own South Texas identity.

Recorded in Nashville, Castillo’s version stays true to the emotional heart of Fender’s original while bringing a soulful country approach accented by distinctive Tex-Mex accordion.

“So grateful to finally share this one with y’all,” Castillo said. “‘Before The Next Teardrop Falls’ has been part of my life for as long as I can remember, and getting the chance to put my own South Texas spin on it makes this release that much more special. Hope we made Freddy Fender proud.”
