Beyoncé and Selena Unite in Historic ‘Irreemplazable (Como La Flor)’ Duet

For nearly three decades, fans could only imagine what a collaboration between Beyoncé and Selena Quintanilla-Perez might have sounded like. On Friday, September 4, 2026, that dream became a reality.

On Beyoncé’s birthday, the global superstar officially released “Irreemplazable (Como La Flor)” featuring Selena, a historic posthumous duet that brings together two of the most influential female voices to emerge from Texas. The track is featured as a digital-only bonus track on the newly released B’DAY (20th Anniversary Edition) Digital Deluxe. 

The collaboration combines Beyoncé’s original Spanish-language vocals from “Irreemplazable,” recorded for her 2007 Spanish-language EP Irreemplazable, with Selena’s iconic vocal performance and the signature cumbia melody of her 1992 hit “Como La Flor.”

A rare approval from Selena’s estate

The historic recording was made possible after the Selena Quintanilla estate approved Beyoncé’s use of Selena’s music.

In announcing the project, the estate described the collaboration as a meaningful meeting between two artists whose careers have crossed cultural and musical boundaries.

“This resounding approval for Beyoncé from Selena Quintanilla’s estate made it possible for this timely and meaningful duet.”

The estate continued:

“Two women from Texas. Two unmistakable and irreplaceable voices that broke down and continue to break down barriers.”

The approval is particularly significant because Selena’s estate has rarely authorized the use of her music by other artists since her death in 1995. 

Two Texas legends

The collaboration carries an even deeper connection because both artists have strong Texas roots.

Beyoncé was born and raised in Houston, while Selena was born in Lake Jackson and grew up in the Corpus Christi area before becoming one of the biggest stars in Tejano music.

Beyoncé has previously spoken about growing up hearing Selena’s music on Houston radio. Selena’s music ultimately helped inspire Beyoncé to explore recording music in Spanish, leading to the 2007 release of her Irreemplazable EP. 

Now, nearly 20 years after Beyoncé released her Spanish-language project, her voice has been placed alongside the voice of one of her musical inspirations.

Chris Pérez: “2 ICONS doing what they do”

Selena’s widower, guitarist Chris Pérez, celebrated the collaboration online, sharing his excitement about hearing two of his favorite singers together.

Pérez wrote:

“One of my top favorite singers Beyoncé just sang along with my absolute favorite singer Selena. I love it! ….2 ICONS doing what they do.”

He praised both performances, adding:

“Beyoncé’s voice sounds AMAZING and Selena sounds LEGENDARY.”

The reaction underscores the emotional significance of the recording for Selena’s family, fans and the generations of musicians influenced by her legacy.

A.B. Quintanilla III celebrates the collaboration

Selena’s brother and longtime musical collaborator A.B. Quintanilla III also welcomed the recording.

Quintanilla wrote:

“Two Queens on one cumbia??? Beyoncé and Selena??? Thank you Beyoncé for showing love and recording one of your classics with one of Selena’s classics.”

His comment highlights one of the most fascinating aspects of the recording: Beyoncé’s “Irreplaceable” and Selena’s “Como La Flor” have been transformed into a new musical meeting point between contemporary pop and classic Tejano cumbia.

B’DAY turns 20

The Selena collaboration arrives as part of Beyoncé’s celebration of the 20th anniversary of B’DAY, her second solo studio album originally released on September 4, 2006.

The expanded 31-track Digital Deluxe Edition includes remastered material, previously unreleased recordings, B-sides, Spanish-language recordings and new collaborations. 

Among the additions are:

• “Cuerpo (Tumbao)” featuring Maluma
• “Irreemplazable (Como La Flor)” featuring Selena
• “Morning Dew (Donk)”
• “My First Time”
• “Can I Watch You” featuring Pharrell
• “Lost Yo Mind”
• “Creole”
• “Back Up”
• New and remastered Spanish-language versions of several songs 

The Selena collaboration is particularly notable because it is one of only two digital-only bonus tracks on the expanded edition. 

A musical connection decades in the making

Selena’s influence on Beyoncé makes the collaboration feel less like a random mashup and more like a musical full-circle moment.

Before Beyoncé became a global superstar, she was a young artist in Houston hearing Selena’s music on the radio. Years later, Beyoncé recorded Irreemplazable, embracing Spanish-language music and demonstrating the influence Selena had on her artistic journey.

Now, Beyoncé has taken that influence one step further by placing her own voice alongside Selena’s.
