The future of Tejano and Conjunto music received another boost as the Tejano NextGen Fund, Inc. announced the recipient of its inaugural scholarship, recognizing a young musician whose passion for preserving the genre reflects the organization’s mission.

The Texas-based nonprofit named Orlando Cano of PSJA Southwest Early College High School as the recipient of its 2026 Tejano NextGen Fund Scholarship, marking the first scholarship awarded since the organization’s launch earlier this year.

“We are excited to announce the recipient of the 2026 Tejano NextGen Fund, Inc Scholarship: Orlando Ariel Cano of PSJA SOUTHWEST Early College High School,” the organization shared on social media.

“His love for Conjunto and Tejano music, commitment to preserving cultural traditions, and dream of mentoring future musicians embody the mission of the Tejano NextGen Fund.

“Congratulations, Orlando! Your future is bright and we are honored to support the next chapter of your educational journey.”

The scholarship represents the beginning of a new effort to ensure the rich traditions of Tejano and Conjunto music continue to thrive through education and community investment.

Founded by Tejano Music Awards-winning singer Angelica Alcoser and Latin Grammy-winning musician Arthur “Tweet” Juarez Jr., Tejano NextGen Fund, Inc. was established to support graduating student musicians pursuing higher education while preserving the cultural legacy of Tejano and Conjunto music. Musician and community advocate James Garcia also serves on the organization’s board.

Speaking with Tejano Nation Radio, Angelica said presenting the first scholarship was an emotional milestone.

“We’re really excited. He was very excited. His parents were very excited,” Angelica shared. “Our real desire these days is to try to make an impact on lives through music and through our positions in the music industry.”

She also revealed the nonprofit recently received a major boost from H-E-B, which became an official sponsor shortly before the scholarship was awarded.

“We did get a notification from H-E-B that they were going to sponsor the Tejano NextGen Fund,” Alcoser said. “We’re really proud of that sponsorship. H-E-B’s slogan is ‘Helping Here,’ and they’re truly helping here.”

Investing Beyond the Stage

While the inaugural scholarship totals $1,000, Angelica added the organization’s vision extends far beyond the monetary award.

“As working musicians, we understand the value of education in this industry,” she explained. “You want to live your dream, but you also have to have something to fall back on, whether it be education or a trade.”

She noted that many musicians face unexpected hardships during their careers and hopes the scholarship program encourages students to pursue both music and education.

“This is a $1,000 scholarship. To some people it might be, ‘Well, it’s only a thousand,’ but it’s something,” she said. “We would love to be able to give a $10,000 scholarship someday. We want to continue knocking on doors and making phone calls so we can get more sponsorships.”

A Rising Star from the Rio Grande Valley

For Cano, the scholarship adds to an impressive list of accomplishments for one of the Rio Grande Valley’s emerging young musicians.

Based in Pharr, Texas, Cano recently graduated from PSJA Southwest Early College High School and has built a reputation as a talented accordionist and multi-instrumentalist with a deep appreciation for Tejano and Conjunto traditions.

Earlier this year, he was selected as one of just 16 semifinalists statewide in Texas Folklife’s 2026 Big Squeeze Accordion Competition, one of the state’s premier showcases for young accordion talent.

Following news of his scholarship, Cano reflected on his journey as both a musician and young adult, saying the recognition inspires him to continue pursuing excellence while representing his community.

He credited Tejano NextGen Fund founders Tweet Juarez and Angelica Alcoser for encouraging young musicians and acknowledged the honor of competing among Texas’ top accordion players in the Big Squeeze competition.

Although he narrowly missed advancing to the finals, Cano said the experience strengthened his determination to continue growing as a performer and cultural ambassador.

“As a professional, I’m willing to spend myself 24/7 working hard and tirelessly to develop and commit myself to be the best version of myself as a musician,” Cano wrote on social media. “My family and I want to represent the Rio Grande Valley and the City of Pharr while continuing to encourage others to make something special happen.”

Preserving the Next Generation

The inaugural scholarship signals the beginning of what Tejano NextGen Fund hopes will become a lasting investment in the future of Tejano and Conjunto music.

By supporting students who are committed to both higher education and preserving the genre’s traditions, the organization aims to ensure future generations not only perform the music but also carry forward the culture, history, and community that define it.

With its first scholarship recipient now announced and new partnerships already forming, Tejano NextGen Fund is taking its first steps toward building a stronger future for Tejano music—one student musician at a time.
