Tejano fans were treated to a heartfelt musical tribute this week as Ricardo Castillon, frontman of La Diferenzia, shared an intimate acoustic performance of the beloved La Mafia classic “Estoy Enamorando.”
Castillon posted the performance on social media alongside a deeply personal message reflecting on the band that helped shape his musical journey.
“As a young kid, I was blessed with the opportunity to get on stage and sing with La Mafia. Those are memories I’ll always cherish. They were one of the bands that inspired me and helped pave the way for my musical journey. It’s an honor to pay tribute to them with my rendition of ‘Estoy Enamorando.’ I hope you enjoy it, and thank you for your continued love and support.”
Before launching into the acoustic rendition, Castillon shared even more memories of his early days as an aspiring singer.
“Well, today we’re gonna recognize somebody that was truly special in my life growing up, and that’s La Mafia, man. La Mafia, when I was a young kid, I would, somehow with five bucks get to Crystal City to the Crystal Ballroom and stand on the side of the stage and listen to La Mafia and listen to Oscar and Armando playing, man. They always gave me the opportunity to go on stage and sing ‘Si Tú Supieras’ with them. So today we’re gonna celebrate them by singing one of their songs.”
The performance struck a chord with fans, serving as both a tribute to one of Tejano music’s most influential bands and a reminder of the mentorship and encouragement that have long been part of the Tejano music community.
A Voice That Helped Define a Generation
Castillon first rose to prominence in the early 1990s as the lead vocalist of La Diferenzia, one of Tejano music’s most successful groups during the genre’s golden era. Known for his unmistakable tenor voice and emotional delivery, he helped the band produce a string of hit songs that blended traditional Tejano with contemporary Latin pop influences.
Songs like “Mundo Sin Guitarras,” “Linda Chaparrita,” “Si Lo Quieres,” and “Anoche Soñé Contigo” helped establish La Diferenzia as one of the premier acts in Tejano music. Even after pursuing solo projects, Castillon has remained a respected and influential figure, continuing to perform while honoring the music and artists that inspired him.
Honoring a Tejano Institution
Founded in Houston in 1980, La Mafia has become one of the most decorated and influential bands in Tejano and Latin music history. Led by vocalist Oscar De La Rosa and keyboardist Armando Lichtenberger Jr., the group helped redefine the genre throughout the late 1980s and 1990s with its signature blend of Tejano, pop, rock, and Latin influences.
Over a career spanning more than four decades, La Mafia has earned multiple Grammy and Latin Grammy Awards, countless chart-topping albums, and a devoted international fan base. Their innovative sound helped introduce Tejano music to broader audiences while inspiring generations of musicians, including Castillon.
Today, La Mafia continues to celebrate its remarkable legacy with its Epic Tour 46, marking 46 years as one of Tejano music’s most iconic groups. The anniversary tour is taking the band across the United States and Mexico, bringing fans a career-spanning setlist filled with timeless classics.
The Legacy of “Estoy Enamorando”
Originally released during one of La Mafia’s most successful eras, “Estoy Enamorando” remains one of the band’s most beloved romantic ballads. The song showcases Oscar De La Rosa’s expressive vocals and the band’s signature polished production, combining heartfelt lyrics with a melody that has resonated with fans for decades.
Its enduring popularity has made it a staple of La Mafia’s live performances and a favorite among Tejano music lovers, making it a fitting choice for Castillon’s acoustic tribute.
By stripping the song down to a simple acoustic arrangement, Castillon highlighted both the emotional depth of the lyrics and the timeless songwriting that has allowed “Estoy Enamorando” to remain a fan favorite across generations.
More than just a cover, the performance serves as a full-circle moment for an artist who once stood on the side of a ballroom stage hoping for a chance to sing with his heroes. Years later, Castillon has become a Tejano icon in his own right, paying tribute to the band whose generosity and music helped inspire the path that followed.
