From the West Side to the World: Un Homenaje a Flaco Jiménez opens June 25 and runs through July 31, 2026, at the Common Ground Gallery inside the Alamo Colleges District ACCESS Building. The free community exhibit will showcase instruments, photographs, awards, and personal mementos that chronicle Jiménez’s extraordinary musical journey from San Antonio’s West Side to stages around the globe.

Located on the first floor of the Alamo Colleges District ACCESS Building at 2222 N. Alamo St., the Common Ground Gallery serves as an artistic and cultural hub for the district, regularly hosting community-focused exhibitions and artist residencies. Through this special tribute, visitors will have the opportunity to explore the life, music, and enduring impact of a musician whose accordion became synonymous with the sound of South Texas.

Rooted in the vibrant dance halls, family gatherings, and cultural traditions of San Antonio’s West Side, Jiménez transformed conjunto music into a globally recognized art form while remaining deeply connected to the community that shaped him. Through groundbreaking collaborations spanning multiple genres, he became a cultural ambassador whose music bridged generations, cultures, and audiences worldwide.

The exhibition celebrates how Flaco’s artistry reflected the joy, resilience, and cultural richness of the Tejano experience while helping preserve and elevate conjunto music for future generations.

A public opening reception will be held Thursday, June 25, with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. Remarks begin at 6 p.m., followed by a special performance from Los Texmaniacs at 6:30 p.m. The exhibit will remain on display through July 31, concluding with a closing ceremony that commemorates the first anniversary of Jiménez’s passing.

The closing event will feature a discussion, a commemorative altar presented by the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, and a musical performance honoring the life and legacy of the Conjunto Tejano legend.

Flaco Jiménez passed away on July 31, 2025, at the age of 86 after battling vascular complications and diabetes. The San Antonio native was more than a Grammy-winning musician — he was the heartbeat of conjunto music and a cultural ambassador whose influence extended far beyond Texas.

Born on March 11, 1939, Jiménez was a fifth-generation musician and the son of conjunto pioneer Santiago Jiménez Sr. By age seven, he was already performing alongside his father, developing the signature accordion style that would help redefine conjunto music and introduce it to audiences worldwide.

Throughout his remarkable career, Jiménez collaborated with artists including the Texas Tornados, Ry Cooder, Dwight Yoakam, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, and the Rolling Stones, earning widespread acclaim for his ability to bridge musical traditions and cultures.

His accomplishments included five Grammy Awards, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015, and the National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1999. He was also inducted into the International Latin Music Hall of Fame and the Tejano Music Hall of Fame, cementing his status as one of the most influential figures in Tejano, conjunto, and norteño music history.

The Common Ground Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Guests are required to sign in at the reception desk before entering the exhibit.

As San Antonio reflects on the life and contributions of one of its greatest cultural ambassadors, From the West Side to the World: Un Homenaje a Flaco Jiménez offers visitors a unique opportunity to celebrate the music, history, and enduring legacy of a true Texas legend.
