Beatriz Gonzalez is embracing her mariachi roots and opening a new chapter in her artistic journey with the release of her latest music video, “Tragos Amargos,” a heartfelt interpretation of one of the most beloved classics in Mexican music.
Originally made famous by legendary norteño icon Ramón Ayala, “Tragos Amargos” has transcended generations as an anthem of heartbreak, nostalgia, and memories that linger long after love fades. Now, Gonzalez delivers the song through the powerful lens of mariachi music, honoring its legacy while adding her own emotional depth and unmistakable style.
With deep respect for Mexican music and accompanied by the sound of mariachi, Beatriz González interprets this classic from her own essence, giving it new life without losing the emotion that made it unforgettable.
The release also symbolizes a fresh stage in her career as an independent artist.
“This song represents the beginning of a new stage in my artistic career: the same passion as always, a new vision, and more desire than ever to continue sharing my music with you,” she said. “Thank you for joining me on this journey and for supporting independent music.”
In an interview with Tejano Nation Radio host Romeo, Gonzalez revealed the music video quickly gained traction after its release.
“I dropped it this past Friday, and it’s been doing very well,” Gonzalez said. “The music video hit 11,000 views, and the track itself reached 14,000 in just three days. I guess people really like the way I sing mariachi. That’s where my heart is.”
The singer credited the visual’s striking atmosphere to director Baldemar Garcia of 1st Class Cinema and the support of local Rio Grande Valley business Cigar Society, where the video was filmed.
“He did a great job with the lighting and really bringing out the smoke from the cigars,” Gonzalez said. “It came out really, really dope. It’s very simple, just a performance video, but it gave that mood.”
For Gonzalez, choosing “Tragos Amargos” was a natural fit.
“It’s one of those classics that is never going to die,” she said. “People really like the way I sing these types of songs, so I wanted to give them one of those. Fans tell me all the time that they listen to my versions of these songs, and that means a lot.”
Operating independently through her own label, Palabra Records, Gonzalez has taken an active role in every aspect of the project, from production and performance to recording and creative direction.
“I’m running the show now,” she said. “It’s a lot, but I love it. It’s very fulfilling to make it happen and see everything come together.”
The artist hopes to continue preserving classic ranchera music for new generations through future projects, including a possible mariachi EP.
“I have this hashtag, ‘New Era Ranchera,’” Gonzalez explained. “It’s the same love for the ranchera songs of the past, but in a new era. These songs are still alive, and I want to help keep them alive in some way.”
Gonzalez also played guitar and vihuela on the recording and was involved in the engineering process. The project featured a talented lineup of musicians, including Elena Zárate on guitarrón, Mike Sital on trumpets and violins, and Juan Cuevas on accordion. The track was recorded, mixed, and mastered by JJ Mendoza at Palabra Records.
As she continues building her catalog independently, Gonzalez says the best way fans can support artists is simple.
“All they really have to do is press play,” she said. “There’s so much that goes into making and releasing a song, but if you want to support an artist, just press play.”
With “Tragos Amargos,” Beatriz Gonzalez delivers a moving tribute to a timeless classic while showcasing the passion, authenticity, and artistic vision driving her next chapter.
“Tragos Amargos” is available now on all major digital streaming platforms, with the official music video streaming on YouTube.
