Joe Zuniga is considering a run for Congress in Florida’s 16th Congressional District, bringing with him a story of perseverance, redemption, and decades of community involvement.

The award-winning Tejano singer, businessman, author, and former Honorary Mayor of South Hillsborough County announced this week that he is exploring a potential campaign following years of civic and political engagement in the region.

Born into humble beginnings and raised by a single mother, Zuniga spent part of his youth working as a migrant farmworker, experiences he says shaped his understanding of hard work, financial hardship, and determination.

His journey also included personal struggles. As a teenager, Zuniga was arrested on a marijuana-related charge and later served time in prison. During his incarceration, he participated in a prison labor program working for the United States Navy, which he describes as a life-changing experience that helped instill discipline and purpose.

“I had to completely rebuild my life from the ground up,” Zuniga said. “Every step forward came from discipline, education, and refusing to let my past define my future.”

Following his release, Zuniga pursued higher education, attending Manatee Community College, now known as the State College of Florida, as well as Hillsborough Community College and the University of South Florida, where he focused on Economics and Political Science. He later continued business entrepreneurship studies in Wales, United Kingdom.

In 2011, Zuniga realized his adolescent dreams and decided to professionally launch his singing career. In 2012, he became the first from Florida to be nominated for a Tejano Music Award and also won a Tejano Globe Award for Best New Artist with his debut single. He was also a finalist on the international Latino talent show Tengo Talento Mucho TalentoSince then, the singer has traveled and performed at various venues throughout the country and has won other Regional Mexican music awards.

Over the years, Zuniga built a diverse career as a successful entrepreneur, published author, and respected figure in the Tejano music scene. In addition to his music accomplishments, he has remained active in local civic efforts and community leadership initiatives throughout the Tampa Bay area.

Now, with Florida’s 16th Congressional District expected to become an open race after Vern Buchanan announced he will not seek reelection, Zuniga says he is seriously considering stepping into public office.

“I’m not a career politician,” Zuniga said. “I’m someone who understands struggle, second chances, and what it means to rebuild your life. I want to hear from the people in this community and understand how I can best serve them.”

According to Zuniga, any future campaign would focus heavily on opportunity, accountability, and community empowerment.

“If I move forward, this campaign will be about proving that no matter where you start, with hard work, accountability, and opportunity, you can rise, rebuild, and give back to the very community that shaped you,” he added.

Zuniga also emphasized his belief in constitutional values and community-centered leadership, referencing the Preamble to the United States Constitution as a guiding principle for his potential candidacy.

“The Preamble to the Constitution of the United States is more than words—it is a promise,” Zuniga stated. “A promise to build a more perfect Union, to establish justice, to ensure peace within our communities, to protect our nation, to promote the general welfare, and to secure the blessings of liberty for generations to come.”

A final decision regarding a possible congressional campaign is expected in the coming weeks.
