The Tejano and Conjunto music community is mourning the loss of Joaquin Rivera, the longtime accordionist and lead vocalist of Conjunto Prestigio, who passed away on April 15, 2026, following a recent illness.
Earlier this month, Rivera’s family shared that the singer and musician had been hospitalized in the ICU, though few details about his condition were made public. During that difficult time, his brother, Ricardo “Ricky” Rivera, posted an emotional message reflecting the overwhelming support Joaquin received.

“I just wanted to take this time and thank everybody, tell you that I wish my buddy could see how much people really appreciated him,” he shared.
Rivera’s passing marks a significant loss for fans and fellow musicians alike. A prominent figure in the Tejano and Conjunto world, he spent more than two decades performing throughout Texas and across the United States, particularly building a strong following in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
As the heart of Conjunto Prestigio, Rivera’s accordion playing defined the band’s traditional sound, while his role as “primera voz” brought emotional depth and authenticity to every performance. The group earned recognition for songs like “Pilares de la Cárcel” and albums including Amorcito Norteño (2021) and Marcando La Differencia (2015), solidifying their place in the modern conjunto movement.

Rivera led the band alongside his brother Ricky, becoming a staple at venues and events across Texas. His passion for the music and dedication to his craft earned him respect across generations of Tejano and norteño artists.
Following news of his passing, tributes have poured in from across the community. Organizations and fan groups, including South TX Homies, David Farias, Jaime DeAnda, and others, have shared heartfelt condolences, honoring Rivera’s contributions and the legacy he leaves behind.
In the days leading up to his passing, a benefit had already been organized to support Rivera and his family during his health battle. That effort will now continue as a way to honor his memory and assist his loved ones.
A benefit event is scheduled for Sunday, April 19, at Players Sports Bar at 4444 W. Illinois in Dallas. The event will take place from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., with a $20 donation at the door. All proceeds will go toward Rivera’s medical and family expenses. The event will feature live performances and appearances by artists and DJs including Martin Reyna, Rey Reyna, Boni Mauricio, Leo Saenz, DJ Godfather, DJ Phatboi, DJ Vixxen, DJ Primo, S.T.S., Angelina B, and Mia B. Raffles, tickets, and food plates will also be available, with additional donations accepted via Zelle.

Joaquin Rivera’s legacy will live on through his music, his influence on the conjunto genre, and the countless lives he touched through his performances.
