Residents and visitors traveling through San Benito during Spring Break may have noticed something new rising above the skyline—not the city’s iconic water tower, but a billboard featuring the unmistakable image of hometown legend Freddy Fender and a simple message:
“See you in San Benito — June 13, 2026.”
In recent weeks, one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks—a water tower visible from Interstate 69E and U.S. Highway 83—became the focus of viral videos and news coverage after Fender’s portrait was temporarily painted over as part of a scheduled refurbishment.
The restoration effort quickly sparked speculation across the Rio Grande Valley about the future of the beloved landmark and whether the singer’s image would return.
City leaders and the Fender estate soon clarified that the portrait of Freddy Fender would indeed be restored to the tower once refurbishment work was completed. At the same time, they hinted that something bigger could be on the horizon.
Now, the newly unveiled billboard may offer the first public clue.
City officials and organizers have remained tight-lipped about the full details behind the June 13 date. But if the billboard—and a series of posts appearing across official channels connected to both the city and the Fender estate—are any indication, a renewed effort is underway to preserve and celebrate the enduring legacy of one of South Texas’ most influential musical voices.
For longtime fans, the anticipation alone carries meaning.
Nearly two decades after his passing, Freddy Fender’s music continues to resonate across generations, with timeless hits like “Before the Next Teardrop Falls,” “Wasted Days & Wasted Nights,” and “Secret Love” still echoing across radios, dance halls, and playlists throughout Texas and beyond.
While details surrounding the June event remain under wraps, one thing is clear:
All roads will lead to San Benito this June.
