Tejano music icon Ram Herrera is continuing his fight against prostate cancer and offering fans a message of faith, gratitude, and resilience as he undergoes treatment.
Herrera, 66, first revealed last September that he had been diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer, calling it a frightening but treatable challenge. Opening up in a heartfelt message, the legendary singer reassured fans that he was facing the diagnosis head-on with faith and determination.
“I want to talk to you a little bit about something very personal to me,” Herrera shared at the time. “I’ve been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer of the prostate. It is treatable from what I understand. It is a scary situation, but it is treatable. I know through the power of prayer and other prayers… I’m going to see it through and through the power of Christ, I’m going to see it through.”
On January 9, his birthday, Herrera provided a positive update after completing his first week of radiation treatment. In a video shared to social media, the beloved vocalist expressed gratitude for the care he’s receiving at San Antonio Cancer Center and the encouragement surrounding him.
“My first week is over on my birthday today, January 9th,” Herrera said. “They even have a happy birthday sign for me and they’re playing my music. I’m feeling good. Just a little tired, but other than that, I’m feeling good. I got about four more weeks to go and then I’ll be done. Right now everything seems to be good. The people over there are wonderful. They treat you like family. I love it.”
Despite ongoing treatment, Herrera continues to perform, including appearing at a recent medical benefit held to help offset his medical expenses. His commitment to the stage reflects the same grit and passion that have defined his career for more than four decades.
The past year has been filled with milestones for Herrera. Over the summer, he celebrated 45 years in the Tejano music industry, and in June, he married his wife, whom he credits as a major source of strength and support during this challenging time. Fans also recall Herrera’s remarkable recovery in 2017, when he overcame multiple serious health issues, including a knee infection, collapsed lung, and heart complications.
Known as “The Outlaw” of Tejano music, Herrera rose to prominence in the early 1980s as the powerful lead vocalist for David Lee Garza y Los Musicales before launching a successful solo career with his band, The Outlaws. His gold-certified 1986 debut album Most Wanted Man and 1989’s The Outlaw solidified his legacy as one of the genre’s most influential voices. Throughout his career, Herrera has earned Grammy and Latin Grammy nominations, multiple Tejano Music Awards, and delivered timeless hits that continue to resonate with fans. In recent years, he has also embraced gospel music, using his voice to share messages of faith and hope.
As he continues treatment, Herrera remains focused on the future and the music he loves.
“I want to keep on singing. I want to still be around. I got a lot of life left,” he told fans.
For now, Ram Herrera says he is trusting in his faith, his doctors, and the unwavering support of his fans as he continues this journey—strong, hopeful, and still very much the Outlaw Tejano music knows and loves.
