Suzette Quintanilla and Director Isabel Castro Share Insights on Upcoming Netflix Documentary Selena y Los Dinos: A Family’s Legacy

MIAMI, FL — Suzette Quintanilla and award-winning director Isabel Castro offered an exclusive look into the making of the highly anticipated Netflix documentary Selena y Los Dinos: A Family’s Legacy during Billboard Latin Music Week in Miami, Florida. The special panel, presented by Netflix, gave attendees a heartfelt glimpse into the film’s creation and the enduring legacy of Selena Quintanilla-Pérez and her family band.

The documentary, set to premiere globally on November 17, offers fans an unprecedented and intimate look at Selena’s rise from small-town stages to international superstardom. Featuring never-before-seen footage from the Quintanilla family’s personal archives, the film delves into the family’s humble beginnings performing at quinceañeras and local events before breaking barriers as Tejano music icons.

Suzette Quintanilla, Selena’s sister, drummer, and executive producer of the film, reflected on the importance of preserving her sister’s impact.

“Selena is not just a Latin artist — she is global,” said Suzette. “It doesn’t matter what nationality you are, you listen to her music and you’re a fan. For that, I am grateful. With a legacy of that magnitude, it has to be supported throughout the years. This documentary is another way to do that. I want to thank Billboard for having us here and for understanding the importance of who Selena is and what we created. I love you guys for that so much.”

Director Isabel Castro (Mija, Darlin) also shared the deep personal connection she felt working on the film.

“Selena and her family’s music taught me to be proud of being part of a bicultural community,” Castro shared. “When I was young, I found solace in her and in their music—it made me understand myself. So when I was approached about this project, it was an immediate yes. It’s been the honor of a lifetime.”

The documentary was executive produced by Michele Anthony, along with Selena’s siblings Suzette Quintanilla and A.B. Quintanilla III, who also played drums and bass in Selena y Los Dinos. Produced by Julie Goldman, Christopher Clements, J. Daniel Torres, David Blackman, and Simran Singh, the project captures the Quintanilla family’s origins — from performing at their Tex-Mex restaurant in Lake Jackson, Texas, to crafting the sound that would revolutionize Tejano music.

Selena y Los Dinos: A Family’s Legacy premiered earlier this year at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, earning the U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award for Archival Storytelling for its powerful use of family footage and emotional narrative.

The film includes touching interviews with Selena’s parents, Abraham and Marcella Quintanilla; her siblings Suzette and A.B.; husband Chris Pérez; and longtime bandmates — painting an intimate portrait of the woman behind the legend: a daughter, sister, wife, and trailblazer whose voice continues to resonate across generations.

Selena y Los Dinos: A Family’s Legacy premieres November 17 on Netflix, inviting fans worldwide to rediscover the heart, soul, and enduring legacy of the Queen of Tejano Music.
