Tejano Nation’s own award-winning photojournalist Mariaelena Villarreal will be among the honorees at the 10th Annual Brownsville Music Legacy Awards (BMLA), taking place on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, at the Jacob Brown Auditorium in Brownsville, Texas.
Organizers of the milestone anniversary edition proudly announced Villarreal’s recognition, praising her impact behind the lens and within the community. “We are proud to announce that we will be recognizing the amazing work of Mariaelena Villarreal!” the BMLA stated. “Mariaelena is not only a highly sought-after photographer capturing the beauty of our music and culture, but she is also a dedicated community supporter. She has gone above and beyond her lens — helping at countless events, supporting students, and raising funds so they can purchase instruments and continue their musical journey. Her passion, generosity, and commitment to uplifting our music scene have made a lasting impact.”
Villarreal expressed gratitude for the honor. “Thank you so much for this recognition! I’m honored to be celebrated at the Brownsville Music Legacy Awards. Capturing our music and culture is a passion, and supporting our community is what drives me.”
Mariaelena Villarreal joined Tejano Nation in 2019 as a contributing writer and photographer, covering Conjunto and Tejano events across San Antonio and South Texas. She also serves as the official photographer for Hohner Accordions and legendary Conjunto group Los Garcia Bros. In addition, she is the Tejano Conjunto Festival Coordinator at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center in San Antonio, the first and longest-running festival for Tejano and Conjunto music, now celebrating 44 years.

Tejano Nation Director of Digital and Radio Content John Henry Medina shared his excitement about Villarreal’s upcoming honor. “We are so proud of Mariaelena for this well-deserved recognition. Her passion, dedication, and commitment to preserving and promoting Tejano and Conjunto culture through her photography, writing, and community work are inspiring. She represents the heart of what Tejano Nation is all about.”
The Brownsville Music Legacy Awards is an annual celebration recognizing individuals and groups for their significant contributions to music and entertainment in the Rio Grande Valley.
