Rene Ramirez Y Maduro, an outstanding group of five young men making a name for themselves in the regional conjunto scene, have released their latest single, “Mentiras,” from their second album, En La Parranda, available now on all digital music platforms. This catchy and very commercial ranchera was written by the group’s founder and lead vocalist, Rene Ramirez, who recently shared the story behind the song and details about his creative process during an interview with Tejano Nation Radio host Romeo.
“Mentiras” came about from an intriguing experience Rene observed. “I write a lot of things that, you know, either I’ve gone through, or I’ve seen my friends go through, or people that I know, or even sometimes I’ll get ideas off of TV — I see something, or somebody says a word, and I’m like, ‘oh, there you go,’” Rene explained. “But this song really came to be because there was this one girl, and I’m not going to mention any names, a very pretty girl, and long story short, she had a lot of friends, guy friends, right? And as far as I could tell, they probably thought they were the only guy friends that she had, and I said, ‘you know what, I think that’s a great idea,’ and so I wrote the lyrics for that. So it just kind of fell into place, man. Like I said, I see things, and you know, I’m not knocking anybody or any person that does those things — to each their own, right? But believe it or not, I’ve got a song that speaks about that too, and it’s coming, it’s in the works.”
Rene also offered insight into how he crafts songs for the band, sharing that he has three different approaches to songwriting:
“The first one is, I sit down and I write the whole song in five, ten, fifteen minutes — it just comes out. The second process is, I’ll grab the bajo sexto or guitar, whatever I have in my hand at the time, and I just start going through the neck, playing different little tunes and sounds until something catches my attention. If I feel it’s catchy or it sounds different from anything I’ve ever heard, entonces I’ll start building on that. And the third process, my friend, is when I write lyrics and, you know, sometimes you hit the wall and can’t go any further. Esos lyrics los agarro y los alzo. It could be five or six years later when I’m working on something new, I’ll remember, ‘Hey, I have something over here.’ I’ll go through those papers, put it together, and boom — you have a song. So yeah, man, it’s a process, and it’s harder than it looks, especially when you’ve got to come up with new material, because we already have the green light for the next project. So we’re excited to start that soon.”
With “Mentiras” and ten more original tracks featured on En La Parranda, Rene Ramirez Y Maduro continue to cement their sound and style in the regional conjunto scene — a sound that is unmistakably their own. The new single is available now on all digital music platforms, and fans can expect more great music from this talented group very soon.
