A Brown Express reunion will happen on August 23, 2015 at Swiss Park in Newark, California, according to a recent Facebook post.
Grammy Award winning Tejano artist and producer Rick Fuentes posted the exciting news on his official Facebook page on Friday.
“I’m very proud to announce a Brown Express Reunion featuring American Idol contestant Savannah Votion on vocals, along with the original singer Ramon Flores. Ex Brown Express drummer Trino Ramirez along with Ex guitar player of Chavela Y Su Grupo Express, Rafael Valenzuela will be joining us. And of course I will take my Dad’s place on accordion and keyboard… DETAILS FORTHCOMING!!”
Brown Express was a ground breaking Chicano/Tejano band from San Jose, California, founded in the 1970’s by accordionist and organist Richard Fuentes, Sr.
In 1976, Chavela Ortiz Hernandez joined the group and became the accordionist and lead singer. She was the first successful female accordionist in Conjunto music and was extremely popular during the 1970’s with Brown Express and in the 1980’s with her own band, Chavela Y Su Grupo Express. She was tragically killed in 1992, succumbing to her injuries a week after a horse riding accident during an album photo shoot.
Rising Tejano singer and former American Idol contestant Savannah Votion will be lead vocals for the reunion and showed her excitement on her official Facebook page.
“It’s such an honor being asked to do the Brown Express Reunion .. I couldn’t be more thankful.. Can’t wait to get to California!”
It’ll be an afternoon to remember with old school Tejano & Conjunto, along with a who’s who of guest musicians at the Swiss Park Bar & Grille, located at 5911 Mowry Avenue in Newark, CA. The event is scheduled from 1:00 p.m til 8:00 p.m, admission is $15.00. Get more details at the Brown Express Reunion Facebook Event page.
