HOUSTON – Tejano legend Oscar de la Rosa, front man for La Mafia, turned an oversold Valentine’s night concert into a profanity-laced rant aimed at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
The Grammy winner didn’t hold back during his Saturday night concert at Houston’s El Dorado night club.
“Go Tejano, what the (expletive) is that about?” asked de la Rosa in front of a packed house. “I have only one thing to say, (expletive) them!”
Tejano artists and fans have had a long-standing frustration with the Rodeo as the genre has been phased out over the years in favor over other Hispanic music genres on what’s still called “Go Tejano Day,” sparking protests and even an online petition.
In the nearly four minute video posted on YouTube, de la Rosa didn’t hold back.
“So to the people of the Rodeo Houston Livestock, (expletive) you! You can kiss my (expletive) Mexican (expletive) or sorry, would that be my Tejano (expletive)?” he said.
“To have one of the biggest Tejano artists and then him being from Houston, being that he’s played the rodeo really says a lot,” said Tejano music promoter Mikey Mike from Mikey Mike Promotions, who was at the club during the tirade, told KTRK-TV. “He was just speaking his mind.”
Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Response:
The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo proudly celebrates the Hispanic heritage of Texas in all of its many facets on Go Tejano Day. “Go Tejano” has never been specific to one genre of music-it’s a play on our popular “Go Texan” slogan which was created in the 1950s.
There is Tejano, Mariachi and other great music around NRG Park on Go Tejano Day at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. We put music on our main RODEOHOUSTON stage that attracts fans and sells tickets. Five of our top 20 most highly attended performances are recent Go Tejano Day performances (2009, ’10, ’12, ’13 and ’14), and 2013 Go Tejano Day is number 1. Go Tejano Day consistently sells out NRG Stadium and draws huge crowds to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
There are only 13,500 tickets left to our 2015 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Go Tejano Day, featuring La Arrolladora Banda El Limn and La Maquinaria Nortea.
What do you think about Tejano being phased out from most rodeo concerts over the past few years? Leave your comment in the box below.

Thanks for every other informative site. Where else could I get that type of info
written in such an ideal approach? I have a project that I am
simply now operating on, and I have been on the
glance out for such information.

Oscar is a has been. had he been writing new music instead of the same tune with different words all these years he would still be brought back. Tejano I am sorry to say is over….well at least for people who are under 30. I am sure it still brings back memories for those older generations just like white people still remember the beatles. But even they have excepted that those days are gone. Banda has been around for many years before oscar was even born. accept you are no longer a big hitter and have gone back to playing honkey tonks places like you used too. Be proud that at least you can still fill a place such that size. Our music and culture are growing and with that comes new genres of music, wether we like it or not. To me personally an artist has to change and keep up with the new genres if they want to stay alive and out there. since la mafia did not do that and kept playing the exact same tune for a decade…all the younger geneartions were listening to banda which has has also changed thier tune to try and keep up with changing generations. SO strop crying because the only thing that hurts oscar and people like him is that he no longer gets paid the big bucks. To me as long as our heritage and it is all of our heritage is still being represented…that is all that matters because that way we are taken seriously in this country. It sounds to me like those tejano lovers are being a racist against thier own people. Face it!!! No matter what part of US you were born in, at some point your ancestors came from where??? Thats right Mexico! So accept it and lets move on as a community and as proud latinos.

sorry but you are wrong about all having ancestors in Mexico mine are mostly Spanish and in my opinion Tejano did get run out. there are still a lot of people young and older generations that miss it, but the fact of the matter is that as more Hispanics crossed the Mexican border the more music was gonna change to the likes of them I have nothing against native Mexicans but the overflow of their people in the southern states has changed music period and as long as there are more of them we have no choice.
