CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Tejano music and radio will come together Saturday, Oct. 31, to honor legendary broadcaster Rudy Treviño during the Cultural State Gala, an evening celebrating his decades of dedication to La Onda Tejana and his lasting impact on the genre.
Treviño, a Tejano ROOTS Hall of Famer and Texas Radio Hall of Famer, will receive an official proclamation signed by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. The presentation will be delivered by Steve Ray of the Texas Music Office, recognizing Treviño’s contributions to Tejano music, its artists and the audiences who have followed his work throughout the years.
Produced and directed by Quarter Moon Productions, the public event will take place at the Holiday Inn Downtown, 707 N. Shoreline Drive in Corpus Christi. The evening begins with a social hour at 6 p.m., followed by the award presentation at 7 p.m. A dance featuring La Fiebre — The Pride of Pasadena — is scheduled for 9:30 p.m.
Jim Luna: ‘Everybody wants to be part of this event’
The gala is being produced by Jim Luna, a Tejano ROOTS Hall of Famer who said the idea grew from his own experience receiving the prestigious recognition and his belief that Treviño deserved the same honor.
“I got this prestigious award two years ago, and I thought if anybody deserves this award, it would be Rudy,” Luna told Tejano Nation.
When the opportunity arose to help organize the celebration, Luna said he was honored to take on the project and work with the people involved in bringing the recognition to Treviño.
Luna explained that Treviño’s influence reaches across generations of Tejano performers, many of whom have benefited from his support and exposure through radio.
“Knowing that Rudy has helped just about everybody in this industry, you know, at one point or another, Rudy, through either Domingo Live or the Tejano Gold Countdown, he’s helped probably 95%, 98% of the artists in this business have been through there,” Luna said.
That widespread impact became a driving force behind the gala, which Luna envisioned as a way for the Tejano music community to come together and publicly recognize Treviño’s work.
As preparations progressed, Luna said artists responded enthusiastically to the opportunity to participate.
“Once I started telling people what I was going to do, and I started reaching out to the artists, I mean Shelly Lares jumped on board right away, and Sunny Sauceda, and David Marez, and Maricela (Hernandez) from the Valley,” he said.
Luna added that the growing list of performers and special guests made organizing the event easier, with artists eager to help celebrate someone who has played an important role in their industry.
“Everybody wants to be part of this event,” Luna said. “It’s made my work real easy, to be honest with you, because what an incredible event, you know, and for somebody so worthy like Mr. Rudy Trevino.”
Tejano stars to gather for the celebration
The Cultural State Gala will feature an extensive lineup of Tejano artists, industry figures and special guests who will perform, share memories and take part in honoring Treviño.
Among those announced are Shelly Lares, Freddie Records, La Fiebre, Sunny Sauceda, Marisela Hernandez, Agustin Ramirez, Barbi Leo, Stefani Montiel, Gabriel Zavala, Balde Munoz, Monica Saldivar, David DeAnda y Xelencia, and many more, are also scheduled to participate.
A house band under the direction of Johnny Hernandez of the Rio Grande Valley will support the evening’s musical presentations featuring Marisela Hernandez performing a couple of songs, highlighted by a tribute to Tejano music legend Laura Canales.
Beyond the music, the program will include speakers sharing stories and reflections on Treviño’s career and the influence he has had on Tejano music.
Luna said the event will give those who have worked alongside Treviño an opportunity to share their appreciation and recognize his contributions in front of the community he has served.
“He has a way with words, man, his verbiage is incredible,” Luna said, describing Treviño as one of the great storytellers he has encountered.
The evening’s program is designed to pay tribute not only to Treviño’s broadcasting career but also to his ability to connect with artists and audiences through storytelling and his continued commitment to La Onda Tejana.
An evening of recognition, music and dancing
The celebration will begin with a social hour from 6 to 7 p.m. in an adjacent ballroom, giving attendees the opportunity to mingle with Treviño, artists and other members of the Tejano music community.
The formal award presentation begins at 7 p.m., with Steve Ray representing the Texas Music Office for the presentation of the proclamation signed by Gov. Abbott.
Following the program and performances, the celebration will continue with a 9:30 p.m. dance featuring La Fiebre, the Pasadena-based group known as “The Pride of Pasadena.”
For Luna, the combination of industry recognition, live music and personal tributes reflects the significance of the occasion.
The gala will bring together artists and members of the Tejano community to celebrate a broadcaster whose work has helped connect performers with listeners and preserve the stories behind the music.
