Grupo Entrego Opens Up About Family, Music and the Road Back to Tejano in La Voz 93.3 Interview

ABILENE, Texas — Grupo Entrego is continuing to make noise across West Texas and beyond, and during a recent visit to La Voz 93.3 FM in Abilene, vocalist and owner Chris Martinez and drummer, producer and co-owner Erick Martinez sat down with host Ro-Z to talk about the band’s history, family, music and what is coming next.

The conversation gave listeners a closer look at the people behind Grupo Entrego, a West Texas-based Tejano group that has continued building momentum since returning to the music scene in 2023.

For Chris Martinez, however, the road back to music was anything but straightforward.

From Heartbreak to a New Beginning

Chris explained that his musical journey began long before Grupo Entrego was formed.

He was performing and recording music in the early 2000s and was in San Antonio working on a demo in 2004 when he received devastating news that his mother had become ill.

“I rushed back home,” Martinez told Ro-Z. “Two weeks later, I lost my mother.”

The loss caused Martinez to step away from music for more than two decades.

Everything changed in 2023 when his daughter was preparing to get married and asked her father if he could bring the band back together.

“That just kind of gave me the spark again to start again,” Martinez said.

What began as a special moment for his daughter eventually became the foundation for Grupo Entrego.

Martinez already had a collection of original songs he had written years earlier, including material from the demo he had been working on before his mother’s death.

“I do have a lot of music that I’ve had from back in the day,” he explained. “And I said, why not? So I decided to go ahead and give it a shot.”

Martinez eventually connected with Erick Martinez, who had already played with several of the musicians who would become part of the group.

“I’m meeting this guy, Mr. Martinez,” Chris recalled. “Eric’s played with the guys that we have now in the band. He’s played with them for 15-plus years. So he brought him on with the band and we created this band, Grupo Entrego.”

The result was a new chapter for Chris and a new musical family.

A Family Band With Deep West Texas Roots

Although the musicians come from different communities throughout the region, Grupo Entrego’s foundation is deeply rooted in West Texas.

The group includes musicians from Big Spring, Colorado City, San Angelo, Odessa and surrounding communities.

Chris serves as lead vocalist, songwriter and owner, while Erick handles drums, production and co-ownership of the group.

Chris’s daughter, Amber Martinez, is also part of the band, providing backup vocals. Previous Tejano Nation coverage has highlighted the family-centered nature of Grupo Entrego, including the band’s “Aquí Estoy” music video, which featured children, family members and fans stepping into the roles of the musicians.

The group’s family connection extends into the songwriting as well, with Amber having begun writing songs of her own.

“Dame” Brings Grupo Entrego and Jenny B Together

One of the most notable recent releases discussed during the interview was “Dame,” Grupo Entrego’s collaboration with current Tejano Music Awards Best New Female Artist Jenny B.

The ranchera was written by Chris Martinez and produced by Erick Martinez. The collaboration was released in May and brought together Grupo Entrego’s West Texas sound with Jenny B’s energetic vocal style.

Chris told Ro-Z that he first became interested in working with Jenny B after seeing her perform live in Odessa.

“I liked it,” he said. “So we reached out to her.”

Martinez sent Jenny B the song and even recorded an acoustic version for her.

“She responded within a day and she loved it,” he recalled.

The recording session proved to be just as positive.

“She made it more fun because, if you know Jenny B, her energy is crazy out the roof,” Chris said.

Erick agreed, describing the collaboration as a natural fit.

“It was like she’s known us or we’ve known her forever,” he said. “Her demeanor, just the way she was, her energy that she brought. Everything went so smooth.”

Chris said he believes the group could not have chosen a better collaborator for the song.

“We couldn’t have picked a better female to do that single with,” he said.

A Songbook Full of Original Music

One of the biggest takeaways from the interview was just how much unreleased material Chris Martinez has accumulated over the years.

As the group’s primary songwriter, Martinez has continued drawing from songs he wrote as far back as the early 2000s.

“I’ve had a book full of music, original music,” he said.

Some of those songs eventually became Grupo Entrego recordings, including music that originated during the period when Chris was preparing his original demo before stepping away from the industry.

Erick said the volume of material gives the group plenty of options moving forward.

“The amount of music written that Chris has is crazy,” Erick said. “It’s literally like a big old book just full of music.”

The producer added that the group already has multiple completed songs waiting for release.

“We have two or three songs right now that are still on the back burner,” Erick explained. “They’re mastered and ready to come out. So it’s just a matter of when we want to release them.”

That creative pipeline helps explain why Grupo Entrego has continued releasing new material rather than waiting years between projects.

“Regresa” Turns Personal Loss Into Music

Another major focus of the La Voz conversation was “Regresa,” one of Grupo Entrego’s most personal songs.

Chris explained that the song was inspired by the loss of his mother in 2004.

“It’s for, if you lost someone and you really, really miss them and you wish you had one more moment with them, this is a song for you,” Martinez told Ro-Z.

The song is dedicated to his mother and transforms his personal grief into a message that can resonate with anyone who has experienced loss.

Tejano Nation previously reported that “Regresa” represents more than two decades of memories and emotion for Martinez, who stepped away from music following his mother’s death before returning to the stage nearly 20 years later.

“Aquí Estoy” Is Chris Martinez’s Cumbia Favorite

When Ro-Z asked the group about their favorite songs, Chris immediately pointed to “Aquí Estoy.”

“For me, it would be the cumbia, which is titled ‘Aquí Estoy,’” Martinez said.

The reason is simple: the song is built for the dance floor.

“Cumbia is always a good vibe,” he explained. “That’s one of those party songs. It’ll get people up on the dance floor.”

Chris said he intentionally produced the song with a Southern San Antonio feel.

“I produced it to be more like a Southern San Antonio vibe,” he said.

The track has become an important part of the group’s live identity, reflecting the ability of a strong cumbia to instantly get a crowd moving.

“Cumbias always get the people going,” Chris said.

Grupo Entrego’s connection to “Aquí Estoy” has also extended into its visual storytelling. Earlier this year, the band released a special music video featuring children, family members and fans portraying the musicians, emphasizing the next generation and the family legacy surrounding the group.

A Halloween Surprise: “El Cucuy”

Just when listeners might expect Grupo Entrego to start thinking about Christmas music, the band revealed that something much different is on the way.

During the interview, Ro-Z tried to get Chris to reveal the title by asking for clues.

After a few guesses, the answer finally came:

“El Cucuy.”

The group has already filmed a music video for the song, adding a visual component to the upcoming release.

“We actually just got finished this past week shooting a video,” Chris revealed.

The song is expected to arrive around mid-October, giving Grupo Entrego a seasonal addition to the Tejano music landscape.

“It’s a great song,” Chris said. “It’s going to be a fun song. It’s a cumbia, of course.”

The title draws from the familiar childhood legend of El Cucuy, the boogeyman-like figure often used by parents to frighten children into behaving.

Chris also indicated that children participated in the video shoot, suggesting the group is approaching the Halloween concept with a playful rather than overly frightening tone.

Keeping West Texas at the Heart of the Music

During the conversation, Chris also took the opportunity to spotlight Abilene and the surrounding West Texas communities that continue to support Tejano music.

“Abilene has a lot of talent as well,” he said. “Abilene also has a very high Mexican, Tejano culture.”

The comments reflect the group’s broader connection to West Texas, where Grupo Entrego has continued performing and building its audience.

The band was also part of the West Texas Lifetime Music Awards in Lubbock, where Grupo Entrego was recognized as Duo of the Year in 2025.

For Chris, the goal is ultimately straightforward: keep making music, keep performing and reach more listeners.

“My main goal [is] just for people to listen to my music and at least like it just for one second,” he told Ro-Z. “Put it on repeat, guys.”

From Big Spring to Beyond

Grupo Entrego’s story is one of second chances, family and music that refused to stay buried.

Chris Martinez stepped away from music after losing his mother. Nearly two decades later, a request from his daughter brought him back.

What began as a father showing up for his daughter’s wedding became Grupo Entrego.

Since then, the group has continued releasing original music, collaborating with artists such as Jenny B, creating music videos that celebrate family and community, and developing a growing catalog of songs.

The band’s music has also continued to evolve, moving between emotional songs like “Regresa,” romantic rancheras such as “Dame,” dance-floor-ready cumbias like “Aquí Estoy,” and now a Halloween-themed cumbia with “El Cucuy.”

The group’s story is still being written — and based on what Chris and Erick revealed during their conversation with Ro-Z, there is plenty more music waiting in the wings.
