Oscar G Honored With Permanent Exhibit at Totally Tejano Hall of Fame and Museum in San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Tejano music legend Oscar G was honored Tuesday, September 15, 2026, with a special exhibit induction at the Totally Tejano Hall of Fame and Museum in San Antonio, adding another chapter to a career that has spanned more than four decades.

The Eagle Pass native, born Oscar Sanchez Gonzalez and professionally known as Oscar G, was surrounded by family, fellow musicians, friends and Tejano music supporters during the special ceremony celebrating his contributions to the genre. 

As part of the induction, Oscar G donated personal memorabilia to the museum, including a stage worn outfit from his performance at the 16th annual Tejano Music Awards featuring a sports coat, boots and cowboy hat. The items will become part of the museum’s permanent collection, allowing fans to connect with the artist’s history and career through artifacts he wore during his journey in Tejano music.

The September 15 induction had previously been announced as part of the museum’s 2026 exhibit series, following the September 1 induction of Tejano artist George Rivas. 

A Career Built on Tejano Music

Oscar G has established himself as one of the recognizable voices of the Tejano music movement, with a career that began decades ago and included performances and recordings with David Lee Garza y Los Musicales.

Since 1992, Oscar G has served as the frontman of Oscar G y Grupo Sol, a five-piece ensemble known for its energetic performances and his versatile vocal style. The group has featured musicians including accordionist Xavier Trejo and drummer Eddie Rivas.

Throughout his recording career, Oscar G has released more than nine albums through labels including Manny/WEA Latina. His catalog includes projects such as Te Quiero, Tu Eres Mia and De Nuevo… Oscar G, along with songs including “Quiereme” and “El Ojo de Vidrio.”

In 2021, Oscar G returned with the catchy cumbia single “Es Amor,” continuing his connection with Tejano audiences and demonstrating the enduring appeal of his musical style.

His career has also extended beyond the recording studio and concert stage. Oscar G has appeared on influential Tejano television programs including the Johnny Canales Show and Puro Tejano, while also showcasing his acting talents in Camino de Lagrimas, recognized as the first television Tejanovela.

“My Heart Is Completely Full”

During the induction ceremony, Oscar G reflected on his journey and the people who helped shape his career.

“Standing here tonight, looking out at all of you, my heart is completely full.”

Looking back on the beginning of his career, Oscar G said he never imagined where music would ultimately take him.

“50 years ago, maybe 60 years ago, when I first started singing, I never imagined that my voice would bring me to a music stage. I just wanted to share the music that lived inside me.”

The singer also dedicated the recognition to people who played important roles in his musical journey, including those who are no longer with him.

“This honor belongs to so many people, especially the ones that are no longer with us.”

Among those he remembered were Manny Guerra, Martin Garcia, Roger Contreras and Manuel Enriquez, whom Oscar G credited with writing “Quiereme.”

He also recognized his family, musicians and team for supporting him throughout the decades.

“To my family, who supported me through long road trips and late nights. To my musicians and team, who shared the stage and the sweat.”

But Oscar G reserved special gratitude for the people who made his long career possible: the fans.

“And next importantly, to the fans. Los fans, thank you for welcoming me to your homes, your cars, and your backyard quinceañeras and weddings.”

He added, “For six decades, without your love, there is no music.”

Preserving Oscar G’s Legacy

The induction also underscored the importance of preserving the personal history behind Tejano music. By donating his stagewear, Oscar G has given future museum visitors an opportunity to see a tangible piece of the artist’s career.

The Totally Tejano Hall of Fame and Museum describes itself as the first 5,000-square-foot Hall of Fame and museum in San Antonio dedicated to exhibiting, showcasing, honoring and preserving the legends and pioneers of Mexican American music in Texas, including La Onda Chicana, La Onda Tejana, Tex-Mex and Tejano music. 

Founded by Roger Hernandez, the museum officially opened in December 2025 and features historic stage clothing, instruments, photographs and other memorabilia connected to the artists and musicians who helped shape Tejano music. 

Located at 1414 Fredericksburg Road in San Antonio, the museum continues building its collection through exhibit inductions and artifacts donated by artists and their families. 

Oscar G’s induction follows a series of 2026 museum honors that have included Ram Herrera, Shelly Lares, Jay Perez and Stefani Montiel, further expanding the permanent record of Tejano music history in San Antonio. 

Oscar G concluded his remarks by thanking the museum for its work preserving the culture that shaped his life and career:

“Thank you, Totally Tejano Museum, for keeping our beautiful culture alive. God bless you all, y que viva la musica tejana.”

For an artist whose voice has been part of Tejano music for generations, the new exhibit offers fans a chance to experience a piece of that journey—not only through the music, but through the personal items that tell the story behind it.
