Miguel Hernandez Makes Music a Family Affair With New Jazzy Cumbia ‘La Herida’

​Award-winning singer, songwriter, producer, and multi instrumentalist Miguel Hernandez launched his solo career in 2004 following collaborations with Tejano legends like Jay Perez, Jimmy González, Stefani Montiel, and Patsy Torres.

Today, he is keeping that musical legacy alive by turning his creative process into a full family affair, performing on stage alongside his son Miguelito “Migz” Hernandez on the drum kit.

​In an exclusive sit down with Tejano Nation, the Premios Tejano Mundial winner opened up about the deep family ties driving his musical journey and his brand new single, “La Herida.” The song is available now on all digital streaming platforms and is currently circulating on Tejano radio stations nationwide.​

A Family Dynamic in the Studio​

From top to bottom, the production of “La Herida” reflects a shared household passion. His wife of nearly 20 years, Amanda, provides backing vocals alongside their 10 year old daughter, Gisele. Meanwhile, his 15 year old son, Migz, lays down the beat behind the drum kit.​

“I love my kids, and I love my family,” Hernandez shared. “I’m just proud of them for always being a part of the music thing.”​

Even the artwork and visual branding stem directly from family talent. His 11 year old son, Noel Hernandez, designed the graphics for the project.​

“He’s such a visual person for 11 years old,” Hernandez added regarding Noel’s contribution. “He’s a songwriter. So he kind of already has that inner emotion, that inner intellect to break out a song and listen to the lyrics, and just comes up with something great.”​

Crafting a Unique Jazzy Cumbia Vibe​

Written by Hernandez after pushing past a period of writer’s block, “La Herida” addresses relationship missteps, self awareness, and second chances. Hernandez wanted to explore the idea of realizing mistakes and asking for another chance to fix things.

However, rather than setting the emotionally charged lyrics to a traditional, slow norteño tempo, he chose to infuse the track with a smooth, jazzy cumbia feel to avoid a melancholy sound and create a feel good vibe listeners can dance to, even if the lyrics bring a tear to their eye.​

The track showcases Hernandez’s multi instrumental abilities, featuring his work on guitar, bass, keyboards, and percussion. The production also features Ray Diaz Deleon on accordion and Fabian Hernandez on saxophone. Engineered, mixed, and mastered by Anthony Perez at R.A.W. Elements Music Group, the project brings together top tier talent across the board.​

Future Releases and Upcoming Shows

​Following his recovery from surgery and a busy summer schedule, “La Herida” serves as the Tejano ROOTS Hall of Famer’s final standard single release of the year, though a holiday track remains in development. Fans can expect a new single every three months starting January 1st, featuring his full touring band on the studio recordings.​.
