Joe Lopez Talks Birthday Bash, Documentary, New Music & Tejano King Fest Coming to Rio Grande Valley

Tejano music legend Joe Lopez is bringing his birthday celebration home to the Rio Grande Valley while preparing for what could be one of the busiest new chapters of his storied career.

During a recent interview with Super Tejano 102.1 host Mando San Roman, the Grupo Mazz frontman discussed his upcoming birthday bash at Mustang Lounge in Weslaco on Saturday, August 15, a forthcoming documentary chronicling his life and career, new music and plans to relocate his annual Tejano King Fest to the Rio Grande Valley next March.

For Lopez, the August 15 celebration is about more than another birthday. It is an opportunity to celebrate with the fans who have supported him throughout his decades-long career.

Joe Lopez Birthday Bash set for August 15

Lopez told San Roman that he traditionally celebrates his birthday with a special event, but this year he wanted to bring the party to the Valley.

The Joe Lopez Birthday Bash will take place Saturday, August 15, at Mustang Lounge in Weslaco.

Lopez said the event will be held inside Mustang Lounge, with the VIP tables already sold out and general admission available on the second floor.

“They sold out the VIP tables,” Lopez said. “Now the general admission is going to be upstairs on the second floor.”

He assured fans that they will still have a good view of the festivities from upstairs and said there was still some room for fans who wait until the last minute.

Lopez specifically invited fans from across the Rio Grande Valley and surrounding communities, including San Juan, Mercedes, McAllen, Mission, Harlingen and other communities throughout the region, as well as fans from across the border in Reynosa and Matamoros.

“I invite every one of you who always support us,” Lopez said.

The celebration will also give Lopez an opportunity to spend time with the fans who have followed his music throughout his career.

“I appreciate very much that people come to my birthday,” Lopez said. “The Valley needs something exciting to go on.”

Lopez teases revealing documentary

One of the most intriguing projects Lopez discussed during the interview is an upcoming documentary about his life and experiences.

Lopez said the documentary will explore events from his past, including the legal troubles and circumstances that dramatically affected his life and career.

He described himself as one of the victims of what happened and said the project will include material from attorneys who represented him.

“There are a lot of things going on right now,” Lopez told San Roman. “You will see it.”

Lopez said he is working to get everything prepared for the documentary and indicated that he hopes it will eventually reach a major streaming audience, mentioning Netflix during the conversation.

He also suggested that the story could extend beyond a single installment, teasing the possibility of a second part.

“I have all the evidence, I have all the proof, I have everything ready, and all this is going to come out in the documentary,” Lopez said.

Lopez did not reveal all of the documentary’s details, telling San Roman that viewers will have to wait for the finished project to hear the complete story.

New music continues the Grupo Mazz legacy

While Lopez is looking back at his past through the documentary, he is also focused firmly on the future.

The Tejano icon revealed that he continues to write and record new music, including his latest original song, “Veo Que Te Vas.”

Lopez described the song as beautiful and emotionally comparable to one of his longtime favorites, “No Te Olvidaré.”

“My new song that I wrote is ‘Veo Que Te Vas,’ and it is beautiful,” Lopez said.

Lopez is also preparing a new album in Monterrey. He told San Roman that six songs have already been completed and that he planned to record six more during his trip.

“I’m going to finish an LP that is going to be something fantastic,” Lopez said.

But that’s not the only album Lopez has planned.

He said he is also preparing another project featuring songs from his extensive catalog, including classic cumbias and hits that he wants to revisit and record the way he originally envisioned them.

After more than four decades in the business, Lopez estimated that Grupo Mazz has recorded more than 500 songs, possibly 580 or more.

That enormous catalog gives Lopez plenty of material to revisit while continuing to create new music.

Tejano King Fest coming to the Rio Grande Valley

Perhaps the biggest announcement for Valley Tejano fans is Lopez’s decision to bring his annual Tejano King Fest to the Rio Grande Valley.

Lopez told San Roman that the next festival is planned for March 2027 and will be held outdoors at Mustang Lounge in Weslaco.

According to Lopez, the outdoor area has been expanded, creating a larger setting for the festival.

“For the first time, we decided to do it here,” Lopez said.

The move represents a significant change for the festival, which has previously been associated with San Antonio.

Lopez said he wants the Valley edition to be something special for local fans and plans to bring in additional Tejano groups for what he described as a major festival.

“The first time that this is going to ever be done in the Valley, it’s going to be the first festival … something big,” Lopez said. “We’re going to have a lot of other groups coming in.”

For Lopez, bringing Tejano King Fest to the Valley is part of a larger effort to give the region something new.

“This is something different that nobody’s done,” he said. “And we want to do it for the people.”

A new chapter for a Tejano original

Lopez’s upcoming projects reflect both sides of his legacy: honoring the past while continuing to create.

From the August 15 birthday bash and the planned documentary to new recordings and the expansion of Tejano King Fest, the Grupo Mazz legend shows no signs of slowing down.

And Lopez believes the key to longevity is continuing to evolve.

“It takes a lot of work,” he told San Roman. “It takes a band that creates new music, creates new sounds and songs … and makes it into something that is going to be forever.”

For Rio Grande Valley fans, the immediate date to remember is Saturday, August 15, when Joe Lopez celebrates his birthday at Mustang Lounge in Weslaco.

Then, in March 2027, Lopez plans to bring Tejano King Fest to the Valley for the first time — potentially creating a new annual destination for Tejano music fans across South Texas and the border region.
