MISSION, TEXAS — The vibrant spirit of Tejano music and community empowerment took center stage in the Rio Grande Valley this month. The Tejano Music Legacy Foundation proudly officially awarded its inaugural Juan Guerrero Legacy Scholarships to two outstanding Mission CISD students during recent senior scholarship ceremonies.
The emotional presentations took place at Veterans Memorial High School and Mission High School, marking a major milestone for the foundation and the preservation of Tejano history.
Honoring a Pioneer, Inspiring the Next Generation
The scholarships were created to honor the enduring memory of Tejano music pioneer Juan Guerrero, the legendary frontman and founder of Los Sheekanos. A celebrated singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist from Mission, Texas, Guerrero mastered both the accordion and saxophone, crafting an iconic sound that crossed borders and genres. Following his passing on March 12, 2022, his family and community sought a way to ensure his dedication to youth and culture lived on.
Through these new scholarships, the Foundation aims to keep his monumental footprint alive while actively investing in the future leaders of South Texas.
The 2026 Scholarship Recipients:
- Venuz Cardoza — Veterans Memorial High School
- Robert Fuentes — Mission High School
Both students were selected and recognized for their stellar dedication, leadership, and unwavering commitment to their future goals.

A Legacy of Perseverance and Culture
The presentations were made alongside proud school administrators, faculty, and local community members. For the foundation’s leadership, the moment was deeply personal.
“These scholarships represent more than financial support,” said Gigi “La Sheekana” Guerrero M.Ed., President of the Tejano Music Legacy Foundation and daughter of Juan Guerrero. “They represent the continuation of a legacy rooted in music, culture, perseverance, and community. My father believed deeply in helping others and encouraging young people to follow their dreams.”
