ARLINGTON, Texas — ¡Viva Tejas! The Texas Rangers are embracing the deep-rooted cultural identity of the Lone Star State with the unveiling of their new Nike City Connect 2.0 uniforms — a bold tribute to Tex-Mex and Tejano heritage woven into Texas history.
Moving on from the previous “Peagle” City Connect look, which highlighted the broader Metroplex baseball legacy, the Rangers’ latest uniform redesign shifts focus to the Mexican influence that has long shaped Texas culture. The result is a striking and symbolic look that blends tradition, storytelling, and cultural pride.
“For the last several years, we’ve worked really hard to build what we think is an authentic and reciprocal relationship with our Hispanic fans,” said Rangers Senior Vice President of Marketing Travis Dillon. “This jersey is another step in that journey.”
That journey has included initiatives like the launch of the Mariachis de los Texas Rangers and the ¡Viva Tejas! concert series, both aimed at celebrating and connecting with Hispanic and Tejano communities across the state.
A Name That Tells a Story
Front and center on the jersey is the word “Tejas,” a name rooted in the Caddo language and widely recognized as the Spanish word for Texas. The choice reflects both historical origins and the modern-day cultural identity of the state.
“It’s in homage to Tejano culture as we know it,” said Daisy Rincón, the Rangers’ Manager of Multicultural Marketing. “There’s a large mix of Mexican-Americans here in Texas. It’s in the spirit of celebrating Texas culture.”
The Power of Cochineal Red
The uniform’s vibrant red base is inspired by cochineal dye — a rich crimson pigment derived from insects and historically used in Mexican art and textiles. The Rangers haven’t regularly featured red jerseys since 2022, making its return both nostalgic and symbolic.
The color carries deep cultural meaning, once associated with nobility and craftsmanship in Mexican tradition, adding a regal and historic dimension to the design.
Tradition Reimagined
The uniform’s typography bridges past and present. The block “T” on the cap draws inspiration from the Rangers’ 1970s era, while the “Tejas” lettering echoes the club’s road uniforms from the 1980s and early 1990s.
“Nike’s theme for us was reimagining tradition,” Dillon explained. “It was a way to bring those elements back in a different context and execute them differently.”
Cultural Details That Stand Out
The City Connect 2.0 uniforms are rich with meaningful details:
- Charro-inspired patterns line the sleeves, pants, belt, and interior elements, honoring traditional Mexican horseman attire often associated with mariachi culture.
- Papel picado artwork appears on the left sleeve — a nod to the colorful Mexican folk art seen during celebrations like Día de los Muertos, weddings, and festivals. The design features a Texas outline filled with intricate cutout-style patterns symbolizing joy and unity.
“It embodies that spirit of celebration, but also joy,” Rincón said of the papel picado elements.
Debut and Availability
The Rangers will debut the new City Connect uniforms on Friday, April 24 against the Athletics at Globe Life Field. The team will wear the uniforms for all remaining Friday home games during the 2026 season, along with select dates tied to Mexican Heritage Weekend and Hispanic Heritage Weekend.
Fans eager to represent the new look can already purchase the City Connect collection, available now at Globe Life Field, MLB and Nike online stores, and select retailers.
With this latest release, the Rangers aren’t just unveiling a uniform — they’re telling a story that reflects generations of culture, pride, and identity across Texas.
