Tejano music legend Little Joe Hernández has issued a heartfelt public statement in support of civil rights icon Dolores Huerta after her recent allegations of sexual abuse against fellow United Farm Workers co-founder César Chávez sent shockwaves through the Latino community and beyond.

Huerta, now 95, revealed on March 18, 2026, that she was a victim of sexual assault and rape by Chávez during their years organizing farmworkers. In her statement, she shared that two of her children were conceived as a result of the abuse. Her disclosure comes alongside broader investigative findings alleging Chávez abused other young women and girls connected to the movement.

After decades of silence, Huerta explained her decision to come forward now, emphasizing the burden she carried while helping build a movement that would change millions of lives.

“I carried this secret for as long as I did because building the movement and securing farmworker rights was my life’s work,” Huerta said. “The formation of a union was the only vehicle to accomplish and secure those rights and I wasn’t going to let Cesar or anyone else get in the way.”

She further underscored the pain behind the revelations and the impact on others who may have suffered in silence.

“The knowledge that he hurt young girls sickens me. My heart aches for everyone who suffered alone and in silence for years. There are no words strong enough to condemn those deplorable actions that he did. Cesar’s actions do not reflect the values of our community and our movement,” Huerta wrote.

According to reporting cited by The New York Times, two women also came forward alleging Chávez sexually assaulted them as girls in the 1970s, with some of his behavior having been quietly discussed within circles of the United Farm Workers at the time.

In response, Little Joe—known as the “King of the Brown Sound”—shared a message of solidarity and compassion:

“First and foremost, we love you Dolores. We stand with you then, now, and always. May God continue to bless you in your life and your work commitments for La Causa— all the work you’ve done and continue to do for field workers, women’s rights, and our communities. May the work, that is so deeply needed, continue to ensure equality and dignity for our beautiful people.

May all survivors find peace.

With sincere love, your fan and friend—
Little Joe”

The statement carries deep historical weight. Little Joe has long been connected to the farmworker movement and the broader Chicano civil rights struggle. His 1972 anthem “Las Nubes” became the official marching song of the United Farm Workers, symbolizing hope, resilience, and unity for generations of workers.

Having grown up as a farmworker himself, Little Joe used his music as a vehicle for advocacy—championing better wages, dignity, and working conditions. His work, alongside his band Little Joe y La Familia, helped define the cultural soundtrack of the 1970s Chicano movement.

The allegations against Chávez have triggered immediate and widespread reactions across the country. Cities and institutions are reconsidering his legacy, with growing calls to remove his name from schools, parks, and public spaces. Additionally, several communities have canceled or altered upcoming César Chávez Day commemorations.

Leaders within labor and Latino organizations are now grappling with the revelations, which have deeply unsettled the historical narrative of a movement long associated with justice and empowerment. Reports indicate the disclosures have “shaken the history of the Chicano movement,” prompting difficult conversations about accountability, legacy, and truth.

As the story continues to unfold, voices like Little Joe’s highlight a broader shift—one that seeks to honor the contributions of the movement while standing firmly with survivors and demanding transparency.

For many, this moment marks a turning point—where the fight for justice includes not only the causes championed in the past, but also the courage to confront the truths that were once left unspoken.
