Nearly a century ago, in 1927, a 20-year-old José Ortega Aguilar penned a song that would transcend time, culture, and generations. That song, “Los Caminos de Dios,” has traveled a long spiritual and musical road — and today, it finds new life in a powerful modern interpretation.
Now featured on Mi Herencia III, Houston visionary Jerry Rodriguez reintroduces the timeless composition with a stirring rendition featuring Grammy Award winner Chente Barrera. Produced by Mario Ortiz Jr. of Baby Grand Records, “Los Caminos de Dios (feat. Chente Barrera)” honors its sacred roots while embracing a contemporary Tejano sound designed to inspire new audiences.
The collaboration has already made an impact, earning Canción del Año – Chicano at the Premios Tejano Mundial earlier this year. The song also received a nomination for Canción del Año – Gospel, affirming its resonance within both cultural and faith-based communities.
Rodriguez, the creative force behind the influential Mi Herencia series, has built a reputation for blending spirituality, heritage, and collaboration into meaningful musical statements. Since the debut of Mi Herencia in 2017 — a project released through Baby Grand Records with proceeds benefiting a cancer foundation — Rodriguez has positioned his albums as a renaissance movement within Tejano music.

The 2024 release of Mi Herencia II elevated that mission, uniting a “who’s who” of Tejano talent including Ram Herrera, DJ Kane, Chente Barrera, and Rebecca Valadez. With each installment, Rodriguez continues to champion a brass-heavy yet modern sound, frequently teaming up with ace producer Mario Ortiz to bring his vision to life.
For this revival of “Los Caminos de Dios,” Rodriguez once again turned to a trusted collaborator in Chente Barrera — a dynamic artist whose career reflects both tradition and innovation.
Chente Barrera, the son of the late Roberto “Pato” Barrera of David Lee Garza y Los Musicales, grew up immersed in the golden era of Tejano music. A premier session drummer and backup vocalist in the early 1990s, Barrera contributed to more than 450 projects alongside icons such as Jay Perez, La Tropa F, and Jennifer Peña.

In 1998, Barrera stepped into the spotlight as a lead vocalist, forming his band Taconazo and launching a new chapter in his career. His 2007 Grammy Award win for Best Tejano Album solidified his place among the genre’s elite, and he remains widely respected as one of its most hardworking “triple threats” — singer, drummer, and songwriter.
Together, Rodriguez, Barrera, and Ortiz deliver a rendition of “Los Caminos de Dios” that bridges eras. The arrangement carries the warmth of traditional conjunto while embracing polished brass textures and modern production elements. It’s both reverent and revitalized — a testament to faith, family legacy, and the enduring strength of Tejano music.
As Mi Herencia III continues Rodriguez’s mission of musical renewal, “Los Caminos de Dios” stands as a reminder that some songs are simply timeless. Nearly 100 years after it was first written, its message remains as powerful as ever.
“Los Caminos de Dios (feat. Chente Barrera)” is available now on all major digital streaming platforms.
