History will echo through downtown San Antonio on April 15 as Sonido Tejano, the first full Tejano ensemble in the history of the University of Texas at San Antonio, makes its official debut at the iconic Empire Theatre.
The groundbreaking performance will take place during Sonidos de San Antonio, a special showcase that will also feature Mariachi Los Paisanos and appearances by Tejano music icons and legends. For the students of Sonido Tejano, the night represents more than just a concert — it’s the launch of a movement.
Tejano music legend Shelly Lares, who leads the ensemble as UTSA’s first Artist-in-Residence, recently shared her excitement while conducting a walkthrough inside the historic venue.
“I am here at the Empire Theater doing a walkthrough for our big show that is coming. We have some amazing announcements. April 15th, San Antonio, Texas, Empire Theater. It’s gonna be Sonidos de San Antonio featuring Sonido Tejano, University of Texas, San Antonio’s first Tejano ensemble and only Tejano ensemble, full Tejano ensemble, as well as Mariachi Los Paisanos. We’re gonna have iconic legends in the building. It’s gonna be incredible, y’all. Stay tuned!”
For the students, the debut marks the first time Tejano music will be performed in a full live ensemble format as part of UTSA’s official curriculum — on a professional stage, in front of a San Antonio audience deeply rooted in the genre’s culture.
The ensemble features a powerful lineup of instrumentation true to the Tejano sound: drums, bass, guitar, accordion, keyboards, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, congas, timbales, and vocalists. The result is a bold, high-energy sound designed to honor the genre’s traditions while showcasing the next generation of talent.

Lares has been documenting rehearsals on social media, praising the students’ passion and growth as they prepare for their big moment.
“Loving every single moment watching these students grow, connect, and truly embrace the power of Tejano music. The passion in that room is REAL — and we are getting ready to showcase what these talented students are all about!”
Sharing leadership of the program is Michael Acevedo, UTSA’s Mariachi Director and an accomplished Tejano musician. Together, Lares and Acevedo have infused the ensemble with real-world performance experience, ensuring the debut will reflect both authenticity and stage-ready polish.
The April 15 performance is more than a showcase — it’s a defining cultural moment. Tejano music, born in South Texas and shaped by generations of Mexican-American communities, will take center stage in one of San Antonio’s most historic theaters, performed by students carrying the genre into a new academic era.
When the lights dim at the Empire Theatre and SONIDO TEJANO strikes its first note, it won’t just be a debut.
It will be history in the making.
