Tortilla Factory continues to push the creative boundaries of Tejano music with the reissue of their single and music video, “Acércate,” a bold fusion of Cumbia, Reggaeton, and Pop that the group dubs a “Pop Cumbiaton.” The track, written and produced by Gabriel Zavala for Tortilla Factory, features Zavala and Alfredo Antonio Guerrero sharing lead vocals, along with a powerful rap performance from Reggaeton artist Julio El Catras. The accompanying music video was directed by multiple award-winning filmmaker Ryan Bazan.
Zavala shared his passion for the project, saying, “Creating, writing, and producing ‘Acércate’ was a true delight. Anytime Alfredo Guerrero hires me to create something ‘out of the box’ for Tortilla Factory, I take so much care in making something his late father, Don Ham, would have been proud of.”
Reflecting on the band’s storied history, Zavala connected the past with the present: “When Tortilla Factory was trailblazing in the 60s and 70s, they were using ideas that were cutting edge in that era — fusing American pop and jazz as well as our cultural heritage in rancheras and boleros. It was a masterfully created fusion. Fast forward to today, and I’m using the same concept — blending traditional rhythms with today’s pop sounds and rhythms. ‘Acércate’ blends Cumbia with a fusion of Reggaeton and pop vocal melodies.”
He continued, “Tejanos and Tejano music are and always will be an American-Texan thing. I’m reminding fans that there’s more to Tejano than trying to sound ‘Mexican.’ No offense, but Regional Mexican and Norteño already have their space. Tejanos need to remember that we are our own identity and culture. We have our own sound — and we are creating it.”
In an interview with Tejano Nation Radio host Romeo, Guerrero praised the collaboration, saying, “This shows the diversity of Tortilla Factory. Having that vintage Zavala sound blended with Tortilla Factory’s fusion of all genres is something special. I think it’s like pop, cumbia with reggaeton. I’m really impressed by what Zavala did. It’s got that vintage Tejano cumbia sound but it’s just hitting on all cylinders.”
Zavala added, “What you could call this is the antithesis to the Regional Mexican sound. This is another option — another direction Tejano could take so we can get out of this one-gear mindset. We’re in a 12-speed automobile, and we need to use all of it.”
Guerrero also highlighted Julito El Catras’ contribution to the track, saying, “That’s very unique and just brings an additional flavor to this sound.”
Alfredo Antonio Guerrero, son of the late Tony “Ham” Guerrero, has led Tortilla Factory since his father’s passing in 2011, continuing the legacy of the three-time Grammy-nominated band. Founded in 1973 in San Angelo, Texas, the original Tortilla Factory — driven by Tony “Ham’s” vision — built its reputation on red-hot rhythms, white-rock influence, and brassy Tejano melodies that became their trademark. Under Alfredo’s leadership, the band has evolved into a modern sound that blends urban Tejano, pop, and global influences, while staying true to the pioneering spirit that made the name legendary.
With “Acércate,” Tortilla Factory once again proves that Tejano music’s future lies in fearless creativity and cultural pride.
