
BROWNSVILLE, TX — La Cultura Vive En Brownsville, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting Tejano and Conjunto music traditions, will host its 9th Annual Texas Best High School Students Conjunto Music Competition on Saturday, April 5, 2025. The event kicks off at 11:00 AM at the Texas Southmost College Performing Arts Center (90 Taylor Avenue, Brownsville, Texas).
This Non-UIL Music Contest will feature 22 high school Conjunto groups from across South Texas, with three representing San Antonio and the remaining schools hailing from Rio Grande Valley cities along Highway 83, from Roma to Los Fresnos. Competitors will perform at the Beginner, Junior, and Varsity levels, with only Varsity-level Conjunto groups eligible for First, Second, and Third Place Awards.
Honoring the Best in High School Conjunto Music
The competition will also recognize individual excellence, awarding Top Placement Trophies and Musical Instruments to the best Varsity musicians in the following categories:
- Accordion
- Bajo Sexto
- Bass
- Drums
- Vocals
These prizes are generously sponsored and donated by Hohner Accordions and 421 Breakdown. Additionally, Varsity musicians who score 9.0 or above will receive the prestigious All-State Texas Best Conjunto Award Medal. Meanwhile, Elementary and Middle School groups will earn Division 1, 2, and 3 Ratings for their performances.
Free Public Event with a Cultural Celebration Atmosphere
The 9th Annual Texas Best Conjunto Competition is free and open to the public. Guests can enjoy a day of music and culture, with food and beverage concessions available at the venue. Parking will be provided behind the Jacob Brown Auditorium, directly across from the TSC Performing Arts Center.
Adding to the event’s prestige, the program will be videotaped by J and B Festival Productions. This project is made possible in part by a grant from the Texas Music Office, Office of the Governor, underscoring the state’s commitment to supporting traditional Texan musical arts.
