PARK CITY, Utah — The highly anticipated 2025 Sundance Film Festival awards ceremony took place today at The Ray Theatre in Park City, Utah, where independent filmmakers and their powerful narratives were celebrated. Among the winners was the deeply moving documentary Selena y Los Dinos, which received the U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award for Archival Storytelling.
Directed by Isabel Castro, Selena y Los Dinos chronicles the life and legacy of Selena Quintanilla-Perez and her family band, Selena y Los Dinos. The documentary takes audiences on an emotional journey from the group’s humble beginnings performing at quinceañeras to their rise as international stars, selling out stadiums and captivating fans worldwide. What sets the film apart is its use of never-before-seen archival footage from the Quintanilla family’s personal collection, offering a rare, intimate look at the iconic artist’s journey.
The documentary’s recognition at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival is a testament to the timeless impact of Selena and her family’s contributions to music and culture. The film was praised by the jury for its ability to transport viewers to a specific time and place, evoking themes of family, heritage, love, and the power of adolescence. The archival storytelling, which played a crucial role in telling the story of Selena’s rise to superstardom, was particularly highlighted in the jury citation.
Abraham Quintanilla, Selena’s father, shared his pride in the film’s achievement, saying, “Proud of Selena Y Los Dinos Documentary winning the Special Jury Award for Archival Storytelling. Thank you to all you who continue to love my kids and Los Dinos.” Suzette Quintanilla, Selena’s sister and a producer on the film, expressed her excitement on social media, writing, “Honestly, I’m just grateful to be able to have the opportunity to create this documentary with Isabel (Castro), Motto Productions, and Polygram. To have it shown at Sundance was an honor, and to get word just now that our documentary won the Special Jury Award for Archival Storytelling is incredibly BAD A$$. PS, soon we will announce where you will be able to watch ‘Selena Y Los Dinos’.”
Kim Yutani, Sundance Film Festival’s Director of Programming, also expressed admiration for the Selena y Los Dinos team and other award winners, stating, “We have such admiration and respect for all of the films in this year’s program. Our programming team is thrilled to have introduced these moving and impactful works to our audiences, and we look forward to following the journeys of each of these talented artists and their projects.”
