
LOS ANGELES, California — In a significant crackdown on counterfeit goods, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers, in collaboration with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and other partners, have seized more than $18 million worth of fake Gibson guitars. This operation marks the largest seizure of counterfeit guitars in CBP history.
The counterfeit guitars, which were intended to be sold as genuine Gibson products, were intercepted at the Port of Los Angeles/Long Beach. According to CBP, the guitars were shipped from China and were destined for various locations across the United States.
“This seizure is a testament to the vigilance and dedication of our officers and partners,” said Carlos C. Martel, CBP Director of Field Operations in Los Angeles. “Counterfeit goods not only hurt legitimate businesses but also pose potential safety risks to consumers.”
The operation involved meticulous inspection and identification processes to distinguish the counterfeit guitars from authentic Gibson products. The seized guitars were found to be of inferior quality and did not meet the safety standards of genuine Gibson instruments.
“Protecting intellectual property rights is a priority for CBP,” stated Donald R. Kusser, CBP Port Director at the Los Angeles/Long Beach Seaport. “This operation underscores our commitment to safeguarding American businesses and consumers from the dangers of counterfeit goods.”
The successful seizure was the result of a collaborative effort between CBP, HSI, and other law enforcement agencies. This partnership aims to combat the proliferation of counterfeit goods and protect the integrity of American brands.
“We will continue to work tirelessly to prevent counterfeit products from entering the U.S. market,” said David A. Prince, Special Agent in Charge for HSI Los Angeles. “Our efforts are crucial in maintaining the trust and safety of consumers.”
This operation highlights the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in combating counterfeit goods and underscores the importance of continued vigilance and cooperation among law enforcement agencies.
