CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — In a surprising turn of events, a woman named Sylvia Ann Castillo has filed a motion claiming to be the legal surviving spouse of the late Tejano music icon, Johnny Canales. This legal action, filed in Nueces County, aims to prevent Nora Canales, Johnny’s longtime co-host and widow, from managing his estate.
According to court documents, Castillo asserts that she married Johnny Canales on August 13, 1980, in Duval County, Texas, and that their marriage was never annulled or dissolved by divorce. This claim, if proven true, would render Johnny’s subsequent marriage to Nora Canales legally invalid under Texas law.
Johnny Canales, who passed away on June 12, 2024, was a beloved figure in the Tejano music scene, known for his charismatic hosting of “The Johnny Canales Show.” His death has now sparked a contentious legal battle over his estate, which includes properties in Duval, Maverick, and Nueces counties, among other assets.
Castillo’s motion seeks a temporary injunction to stop Nora Canales from selling or transferring any property owned by the estate, withdrawing money from financial accounts, or altering any financial records. The motion also requests an accounting of all properties and funds currently in Nora’s possession that belong to Johnny’s estate.
A hearing on this matter is scheduled for November 6, 2024. The outcome of this hearing could significantly impact the management and distribution of Johnny Canales’ estate, potentially altering the legacy of one of Tejano music’s most iconic figures.
