Texas Monthly is set to launch a new podcast series, Viva Tejano, on November 12. This exciting series comes at a time when Latin music is rapidly ascending in the U.S., becoming the fastest-growing genre in the nation. Last year, one of its biggest stars, Peso Pluma, garnered more YouTube views than Taylor Swift, highlighting the genre’s immense popularity.
Interestingly, much of this musical trend’s roots can be traced back to Texas. Thirty years ago, Tejano and regional Mexican music were on the rise, with Johnny Canales’s musical variety show—often recorded in Corpus Christi—reaching audiences across the Western Hemisphere.
Viva Tejano will be hosted by J.B. Sauceda, who recently took over as host of Texas Country Reporter. In this podcast, Sauceda will engage in conversations with legendary Tejano artists and well-known Tejano music fans, exploring how the music has shaped their lives. The series promises a nostalgic journey, offering a closer look at the influences behind some of today’s biggest acts in música Mexicana. The first episode will be available on Tuesday, November 12, with Texas Monthly audio subscribers getting exclusive early access to episodes, along with bonus interviews and additional audio content.
Listeners can find Viva Tejano on Apple Podcasts or their preferred podcast platform. This series aims to tell the story of Tejano music through the voices of those who have lived it, providing a rich and authentic narrative of this vibrant musical heritage.
