This weekend, Tejano Gold Countdown is set to air a special edition show commemorating the sixth anniversary of the passing of Tejano music icon Jimmy González. As a revered producer, guitarist, vocalist, and the charismatic frontman of Grupo Mazz, González’s influence on Tejano music is immeasurable. His legacy continues to resonate through the genre’s vibrant rhythms and soulful melodies.
Jimmy González: A Tejano Titan
Born in Brownsville, Texas, Jimmy González was a trailblazer in the Tejano music scene. He co-founded Grupo Mazz in 1978 alongside Joe Lopez. The band quickly rose to fame for their innovative blend of Tejano cumbia, incorporating synthesizers and rock elements into their sound. Their idiosyncratic style and González’s musical genius propelled them to become one of the most celebrated bands during Tejano’s golden age.
González’s contributions to music were recognized with multiple Latin Grammy Awards for Best Tejano Album, celebrating his artistic excellence and enduring impact on the genre. Sadly, the Tejano community bid farewell to this legend on June 6, 2018, when González passed away due to complications from diabetes.
Grupo Mazz: A Legacy of Innovation
Grupo Mazz’s legacy is built on a foundation of groundbreaking music and passionate performances. They were known for their “bad boy” image and their ability to captivate audiences with their dynamic stage presence. Their songs topped Billboard’s Latin music charts and won numerous awards, cementing their status as Tejano royalty.
A Countdown to Remember

In honor of Jimmy González, Tejano Gold Countdown will not only reflect on his storied career but also showcase the best of Tejano and regional Mexican songs from the USA and México. The syndicated radio program, which has been the pinnacle of Tejano music countdowns for over three decades, will feature a curated list of tracks that continue to shape the Tejano music landscape.
