A beer created to honor the legendary Tejano music icon, Selena, did not have a long run. The Los Angeles-based Chicano lifestyle boutique, Mi Vida, teamed up with POC-owned craft brewery Brewjeria to release a limited-edition beer called “Tomo La Flor” in homage to the late Mexican American singer. Unfortunately, before a second batch could be made, Selena’s estate sent a cease-and-desist letter to the businesses, effectively halting production.
The “Tomo La Flor” Beer
The limited-edition beer was named after one of Selena’s well-known hits, “Como La Flor.” Described as a hibiscus pale ale with a hint of guava, it quickly gained attention among fans and beer enthusiasts alike. The initial 1,000 cans sold out rapidly, reflecting the enduring love for Selena’s music and legacy.
Legal Intervention
Selena’s family, known for their vigilance in protecting her image and likeness, swiftly intervened. The cease-and-desist letter ordered Brewjeria co-owner Agustin Ruelas to halt production. Despite the brewery’s assertion that the beer’s visual treatment did not infringe on copyright or trademark, Selena’s estate remained firm in their stance.
“It was a downer,” Ruelas told LAist. “We just wanted to honor Selena.”
A Familiar Pattern
This incident is not the first time members of Selena’s estate have taken legal action against businesses using her name or image. In 2023, Selena’s father, Abraham Quintanilla Jr., sued a cruise company for unauthorized use of her likeness. The family’s commitment to preserving Selena’s legacy remains unwavering, even as new tributes emerge³.
While the “Tomo La Flor” beer may have been short-lived, Selena’s impact continues to resonate, reminding us that her music and spirit remain timeless.
