The Tejano Music Awards (TMAs) recently withdrew the Lifetime Achievement Award recognition from legendary singer Joe Lopez. The decision came after public outcry due to Lopez’s criminal history. However, another prestigious event, the 5th annual Guadalupe Tejano Awards, is set to honor him with the same accolade on Sunday, November 19, in San Antonio, Texas.
Lopez, co-founder of the popular band Grupo Mazz, has a complex history. In 2006, he was convicted of raping his 13-year-old niece. After serving 12 years of his 20-year sentence, Lopez was released from prison in 2018. As part of his parole conditions, he must register as a sex offender.
Initially, the Texas Talent Musicians Association, producers of the TMAs, decided to honor Lopez for his significant contributions to Tejano music. However, the decision faced intense backlash from the Tejano community. Many argued that celebrating someone with such a criminal record was inappropriate. Retired Tejano broadcaster Abegail Chavarrilla succinctly stated, “We should not be celebrating or commemorating or giving accolades to people who committed these types of crimes.”
Despite the controversy, the Guadalupe Tejano Awards organizers remain steadfast in their decision. Founded in 2019, this event recognizes and celebrates Tejano artists’ achievements. Lopez, nominated for four awards, including Song of the Year, Album of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year, and Tejano Group of the Year, will be in the spotlight once again.
The Guadalupe Tejano Awards’ choice to honor Lopez has sparked heated debates. Supporters argue that his musical legacy deserves recognition, while critics maintain that his criminal past should disqualify him from receiving any accolades. The decision highlights the delicate balance between artistic achievement and personal accountability.
As the Guadalupe Tejano Awards ceremony approaches, the controversy surrounding Joe Lopez remains unresolved. Whether he will emerge with trophies or face further backlash remains to be seen. Regardless, this situation serves as a powerful reminder that recognition comes with responsibility, and the Tejano community continues to grapple with its implications.

I don’t agree with what Joe Lopez did in his past. But do I need to remind some people we have a lot of old country music singers that have been to prison regardless if it was theft, robbery, assault on an officer,or whatever it might have been that didn’t stop Johnny Cash, nor Willie Nelson nor merle haggard or Frankie Senatra. So give the man what he deserves his Grammy award and trophies. He completed his parole and became a very good vocalist he deserves his awards and people need to stop judging others for there past history because you are not the judge here God is let me remind you idiots about that. He’s a damn good vocalist and he has made something of himself. So the ones who think that they are so perfect and think that there opinions matter and judgemental thinking have y’all become successful in your life besides throwing trash on people that have had a criminal record. Let me guess y’all probably go to church and call yourself Christians and then come out here and be judgemental I call people like that hypocrites.

Facts. Only one of the famous that you mentioned was in prison. Merle was in prison but not for rape or any of the liking. Neither Frank Sinatra, Willie Nelson, nor Johnny Cash were ever in *prison.
Quoting you, “He’s a damn good vocalist and he has made something of himself.” Ma’am, I agree. He made it big in the Tejano music industry; however, as much as Joe Lopez’s musical legacy deserves recognition, so does the severity of the subject and the victim.
Should that disqualify him from receiving any accolades, etc? Ask the young victims who experience such crimes and who suffer from post-trauma, and ask their parents.
* A jail is generally a short-term facility to detain individuals awaiting trial or sentencing. Prisons, on the other hand, are long-term institutions that house individuals convicted of a crime and sentenced accordingly.
Celebrities deepen their connection with their fans, gaining a high degree of recognition and TRUST.
His talent is not in question!
Best wishes, Joe. You are headlining everywhere, including in Mexico. Bendiciones
